Transcription Service?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yup. It works out pretty well for everybody. The class secretary coordinates the service. Notetakers in our class are paid a pro rata $40/hour dependent on lecture length. Transcriptions are due to Mark two days after the lecture, or else a monetary penalty is assessed ($10, I believe?). Likewise, if a transcription is finished the same day, a $10 bonus is given. Transcriptions are distributed via e-mail, along with archive copies posted on the class website for download. Print copies of transcriptions are available for those willing to cover the additional cost ($50/semester, give or take). It's easy money, but whoever arranges the service needs to stay on people to make sure they don't slack off and turn out substandard notes.

at stony brook it costs around 120-140 a semester to get. not sure if those are the exact numbers. The med students do the transcribing.

Thanks guys, that bascially what we do also, just trying to see if there was anything to Improve it, becuase someone told me that IU hires a professional transcriber. But I guess its a class thing just like here.

That'd be an expensive way to do it, but if quality was becoming a chronic problem it might be a way to address the matter.

We pay $120 a semester

The people transcribing get paid $35 a lecture hour and the editors get paid $10 a lecture hour. There is supposed to be a 2 day turn around with a penalty if late.

To address quality: The inital person transcribes the lecture and hands it over to the editor. The editor listens to the lecture and follows the transcript to catch any errors then hands it over to the web guy which then we can download from the site. No paper option.

At Buffalo, the instructors of major courses distribute the lecture notes, either on paper or on-line. We have never needed a transcription service. 😎
