Transcripts when applying

Hey! Since y'all are always so knowledgeable...

Are people generally having their transcripts sent to them and then including the sealed envelopes in their packages to schools with other additional info? Or are you having the schools send them directly?

This seems to be the one place where most of the programs are kind of vague. I am assuming that is because if it is in a sealed envelope it makes no difference who put the postage on it and addressed it, and some schools do state that...

I honestly don't remember what I did for grad school, although I can say that for postdoc, it varied from site to site--some wanted it sent directly to them, whereas others needed it mailed directly from the school.

I'd say contacting each program individually and asking for their preference is the safest way to go.

I did both...mailing directly to school and compiling a nice packet of everything required. This process should bring out any obsessive-compulsive traits in you. 😎

One of my colleagues impressed a clinical supervisor with color-coded folders for each program. No one noticed, but I had color-coded paperclips...for the fun of it. You don't have to do any of this...but, you must be organized. Otherwise, you'll drowned quickly once you're in graduate school (for a doctoral program). I made it through my first masters program without being as compulsive as I am now, but I learned pretty quickly that it interferes with other's perceptions of you (at the doctoral level) if you're not 'buttoned-up' & have your @#*t straight.

The first two years I applied, I had them all sent to me. It made me feel better to know that I was sending them to the school directly, even though it was an extra step. I didn't like the idea of just trusting that your school would send them on time and everything. But my third (and last!) year of applying, I was less organized and ran out of time and had them sent directly to the schools. I don't think it makes that much of a difference to the programs as long as they're sent to the right address. I think it just depends on how OCD you are. 😉

Unless specified otherwise, it doesn't matter how you choose to send your transcripts. What is important however, is that if you chose to send them all together as a part of a packet, make sure that your transcript has an official seal on the envelope. That way, whichever school you apply to knows that you haven't tampered with it in any way.
