Hi,

I've been attending AUC for a semester and a half. In college I had a 2.9 GPA with a 500 MCAT. I am doing well, but I want to try to be a U.S. medical student. I understand that a transfer to a med school is difficult, but I want to know if it's possible to join a SMP linkage/PostBacc program to enter a DO school or maybe even an MD school upon completion.

Thanks.

Anecdotally, I only know of a pittance of people who have transferred from the Carib into U.S. medical programs after finishing MS2 (i.e., basic sciences) and passing USMLE Step 1.

I would think that doing a "post-bacc" to get into D.O. at this point is going to set you back and is basically starting over. Don't know of any program that would "bridge" or "link" you at this point.

Since you've already cast the die at AUC, you might want to stick out the basic sciences courses and then try a transfer. Start planning now knowing that these are rare and the chances are low. However, there are a lot of new allopathic schools since I attended, and I'm sure some of them may be willing to accept a transfer if your scores and grades are good.

Or, if you have the time, money, and inclination, you might just want to start over.

Just stick it out at AUC. If you are doing well, and get a great step 1 score, then who cares that you went to AUC if you get the residency you want. Transfers to US med schools from the carib schools were a thing of the past (I believe early 2000s). No point in wasting time and doing a post bacc/DO. That's insane. Just finish up AUC.

I know of 2 that did it. Both had nearly all A's in the carib. school. I believe they had to do the year over.

My school has taken exactly one student into our SNP in the seven or so years the program has been in existence. You might have luck if you apply broadly, but seriously, I think it's time for Plan B.

As an Adcom member, I think that you will always have the cloud of judgment issues trailing you. For starters, why didn't you do the SMP instead of going to your current school.

I personally know one person who started Ross with me at the same time and has now transferred to a DO program... we both are applying this match season. She is a very very extremely smart person who ACED every exam and practical. In order to transfer, I think she had to get LOR from faculty and dean. It must have been stressful times for her, but in the end... she is closer to ensuring a Match.

OP, if you believe that you have what it takes meaning A's in everything and great recommendations. If you have connections to faculty or Admin in US schools... that would be a great advantage. GL
