My question is this. Is it possible to transfer from a DO school to a 3rd year spot at an island MD school so I would not have to leave the US? Has anyone else tried this or knows if it is possible?

•No can do.•

Check with www.aoa-net.org

At times, even some internships in allopathic institutions aren't accepted by the AOA in light of the AOA by-laws.

If you aren't comfortable with attending a osteopathic program, then I would encourage you to attend a US allopathic program. I would think it is very hard to persuade the osteopathic school to allow you to transffer.

Further more, this might be seen as an underhanded way to get your "MD" behind your name. If you don't feel comfortable with an "DO" behind your name, then by all means just attend a US allopathic program, or just attend a Carribean program.

Likely your plan might not be possible since the AOA might try to revoke the credited 2 years of school work. The AOA can be mean like that.🙁

I wish you the best.

I don't know of anyone.

I should think it's quite possible. But, in my opinion you would be crazy to do so.

First of all, you would have to take the USMLE, which is harder than comlex. And before others start to harass me on that point one of the DO mags last month had a study which confirmed that.

Secondly, the establishment view is, US MD, US DO, real IMG, island MD.

Thirdly, you have more residency opportunities, as you have access to DO slots as well.

And, if you are a mature student (I was 40 when I went to DO school) then being a DO vs MD will make no difference to you - lets face it, if you're my age you're not going into surgery.

Anyway, what's your reason for the question besides wanting a suntan? If you're interested I know a way of getting a perfectly valid MD along with your DO. Of course, to use it in the US would require USMLE / ECFMG etc. PM me if you want details.

Thank you! This is the very first time in all my years reading posts in this entertainment site that someone actually makes a distinction between "real IMGs" and island IMGs.

It tickles me to no end to have people say "Hey! That competitive program took two IMGs last year! I'm so going to Aruba for med school!" They never realize that the two IMGs came from Oxford and Vienna.

I know the route your talking about through the university of antigua.......it is not a perfectly valid MD and most people would laugh at that. That program is designed for DOs who want to permanatly move to other countries that dont recognize the DO degree. They basically take your money, set you up for a few seminar type of thigns and give u an MD.
