Hello Friends,

I was wandering if it is possible to transfer from a DO to an MD school. Not because I have MD envy
but because my fiancee has gotten into a very prestiges law school and all the DO schools that I have gotten in are far from her and I don't want to be away from her for 4 years. I really appreciate your advise.

I don't think there is such a thing...I know that transferring between DO school is hard enough. I was told from a couple who transferred from Touro to Western COMP that the only way they could do it is because one of their parents past away and they needed to be with the family. So, to transfer into a MD school, especially with the different curriculum would be hard. If you do decide to go to DO school, maybe you should pick one with more freedom during your last two years that way you can be together then. It's just a suggesstion...

DoctorT,

It is possible, I hear that it's easier to do it after your 2nd year since you just have rotations left to do. I think at COMP, you have to get a letter from the Dean for approval.

I've known several people who have or are attempting to transfer, DO to DO as well as DO to MD.

Good luck,
Eric

I know of at least 2 instances where a student transferred from a DO to an MD school.

It does happen, but not very often, and is usually NEVER allowed until the end of the 2nd year. Of course, it might be possible to do your 3rd and 4th yr rotations at a location that's closer to your fiance, which means you wouldn't have to transfer. In any event, I doubt your situation would merit serious consideration, as even long distance marriages are not unheard of in medschool (fiances wouldn't even count!). Most of the transfers that are allowed, are due to serious family illness, or if children are involved. Even then, you could only transfer if a seat were to become available. If it's that big a concern, maybe it would be best to just wait and reapply next year. The other option is to matriculate AND reapply. I know of one person who did this, but he had to repeat his first year at his new school! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Dr. T, it is possible to transfer from DO to MD... I just did it... for many reasons, family being #1. I only applied for transfer to one school, UNMC. They required that you be a NE resident and that you have a legitimate reason that you need to be there. I did not look into any other schools that take transfers, but there are quite a few other schools that do take DO transfers from what I've heard from other classmates who are transferring. It does also depend if the school has open spots. I just finished my second year and will be starting as a third year at UNMC.

It is possible. I went to NYCOM and had a classmate who transferred after 1st year, but she had to repeat the first year. Its a tough choice, but sometimes you have to do what is best for your personal life. Good Luck.
