Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any comments on how easy or hard it would be to transfer from NSUCOM to say another private osteopathic college. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks...

Doogie

pretty easy to transfer. we had two people transfer to other d.o. schools without a problem. just have to see what the other school's transfer policy entails.

MOZ D.O.

is it possible to transfer to nova after my first year of med school?

what is wrong with NSUCOM if you don't mind my asking? I have heard good things about the school Doogie. Just curious nothing personal. Just getting info for my own future plans

Don't be alarmed by my posts, NSUCOM is a good medical school. However, the recent new rules that have or will be implemented are just downright dumb. They are going to implement an attendance policy at the school. Few things wrong with this ....

a) If I am expected to be forced to sit through these lectures, they better be damn good lectures. However, this hasn't been the case. There have been times where the first year lecturers have read the notes verbatim. There are some who learn this way, and there are others that don't learn by this method. Some people have described this as "Hooked On Phonics...Medical School Edition"

b) By being forced to sit through lectures from 8 to 4-5, we are dead tired by day's end. However, the burden doesn't stop there. There are things such as laundry, and household chores that must be accomplished. This really limits the time you have to study.

c) The library has limited hours. I wish the library be open longer.

Everytime the school has been asked why is there an attendance policy...the response has been "It's part of the culture of this school." There is no logic to their argument.

There are other things that are wrong with this school. However, TAKE NOTE, there are things wrong at EVERY MEDICAL SCHOOL. I have yet to hear of a perfect medical school.

If I had to do it all over again, I would choose a school that has no attendance policy. There are some who love this school and wouldnt do a damn thing to change their position. There are others that totally despise this school and wish to get out of dodge ASAP.

Few bits of advice....

1) Go to the school that is the cheapest
2) Go to a school that tailors to your needs in terms of career and family

Yikes sorry to hear about your problems at NOVA. Forced attendence would suck big fat ass!!!!!!

What do you do if have a dentist appointment or something like that? I wonder how this will affect prospective 1st years in regards to choosing NOVA. I know that know matter what they will fill their seats some people will do anyting to be a doctor...but it would be interesting to see what the next incomming class will be like compared to all the previous ones.

PS
You guys can still wear scrubs to class right or do you have to dress up?

I respect your opinion and everything, but I think that your reasoning isn't a strong enough reason to switch medical schools, which isn't exactly the easiest thing to do, either. You will have missed certain classes that the other school's students had had, as well as interrupted each school's learning styles. I would just grit my teeth and last your second year... its only one more year, by the time you're a third year you won't have to worry about a thing.
Now if you were concerned about your schools' clinical years and wanted to transfer because of that I can understand... but just for an attendance policy, that likely won't be enforced much anwyays...

And your attendance "grade" will show up on your Dean's letter. When you interview for residency, the Dean's Letter doesn't mean much. I knew several colleagues who had "poor attendance" on their Dean's Letter... and the Program Directors often laughed at it and shook their head that our school put that on there... Something to keep in mind Doogie.

i want to goto nsu next year for my second year, i never miss class, so i wouldnt mind the attendance record. do i have a chance at transfering to nsu? i would really like to go there...

The new attendance policy will affect our grades. While nothing (to my knowledge) is finalized, the proposal is somewhere between 1-2 off if attendance is above 50%, and an automatic failure if below 50%. While 1-2 points isn't much, if you are a borderline student, it can be a backbreaker (but if you are borderline and not going to class, maybe you should reasses your study habits).

Beachbum

you won't know if you can transfer unless you try, good luck

Q,

The attendance policy is only a minor reason why I was considering the option of transferring out. It's more of a home issue with me. Would like to be closer to home rather than in Florida but I am going to deal with it for the next 1.5 years and hopefully rotations will be better.

Beachbum,

Very hard to transfer after your first year....if you did happen to transfer to this school , you would most likely have to sit out a year and join the class of 2008. It's easier to transfer at the end of second year. Take note, the people who have transferred have had solid reasons such as family illness, wife having a baby, etc. There are some who transferred just to be in the specific geographic location but they had stellar board scores and grades. There was a former NSUCOM student who transferred to St. Louis Med and wound up being an ortho doc. According to him, he just wanted out of FL and it helped that he aced the USMLE I.

You can transfer to an MD school from a DO school? That is unheard of.

NOt unheard of. Had several classmates of mine who did it. Such schools were one in Alabama and LSU. One guy transferred to a Caribbean school.

Fair enough. I knew there had to be another reason. Rotations go by REAL quick and you can usually schedule most of them outisde of where you are. I went to Suncoast in Largo and got to reschedule about 3 or 4 of my 3rd years at away hospitals instead of around Suncoast (very lax).

I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR on this one. I'm a dental student (2007), but I've been very disappointed by NSU.

Of all people QuinnNSU was one of the people whom I feel has made misleading posts that would lead one to believe that NSU was great.

I think the school is ok, but it is nothing special, and the way things are handled here is often good for some things, others are poor.

1. The library does suck doesn't it? It's like 2 rooms! Not only that the security here are total nazis due to the high level of crime in this area.

2. I dislike my classmates. There is no local social scene or real bars to speak of.

3. Rent is high considering that this a suburban area (with horrid traffic!)

4. The bonus of Florida nightlife and beaches is all but wasted except for school vacations and twice a semester visits, due to the 8am classes, late Florida nightlife, classes that end at 5pm and traffic.

I wish I could transfer, but for me it is all but impossible.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Also keep in mind that i have GRADUATED from NSU... you'll find that most first or second years dislike their school. This is an almost universal feeling among medical students (and I'm sure dental students), ESPECIALLY DO students. "The grass is always greener."

No social scene? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? You are in one of the hottest party scenes in the WORLD! HAHAHAHAHAHAA

Yea man, I don't have the slightest clue where you've been for the past year... maybe you swallowed too much fluoride or something... The school does have it's drawbacks like every other medical school DO and MD in the country. But if you are having trouble finding a social scene, you are doing something really wrong.
Hey Quinn, what do you mean about rescheduling some of your 3rd year rotations at other hospitals.. Is that a hush hush thing that can be done at any core site, or is that a Suncoast phenomenon... i have heard they are very lax there as well.

At Suncoast, I was able to schedule my Peds rotation to a large 800 bed hospital for my inpatient Peds, my EM rotation at a Level 2 Trauma center instead of Suncoast, and I think I got my Surgery rotation to be at 3 different hospitals instead of just Suncoast. It was a nice break. I have my opinions on Suncoast but dont' feel its appropriate to put it here... PM me if yer curious.

Don't worry, I have no intention on doing my third year in suncoast. I think I'm gonna rank Broward General #1 and get my ass handed to me while learning a lot. Our rank list is due friday so I'm really finalizing my decision right now on how I"m going to rank all 12. Suncoast will be one of my 4th tier choices.... I'm trying to find out how I feel about Miami Heart and Mt. Sinai, can you give me any inormation on these hospital tracks? I'm getting mixed reviews.. thanks...

It will be hard for you to find UNBIASED information about rotation sites, unfortunately. Broward is good in that you see more pathology (more akin to MD programs) however, your role as a student is questionable. Suncoast is good that you have a lot of time off, but the pathology is subpar. From what I've gathered from my friends during school, Memorial seemed to be the well-rounded rotation site (except the ER rotation).

Well, yes there is more than enough nightlife in Ft. Lauderdale, South Beach, Hollywood, Clematis St in West Palm...

What I mean is around the school..

Locally, there is the Davie Ale House and the Round-Up and maybe the Falcon Pub.

The Davie Ale House is like a spiffed up TGI Fridays's and there's no decent (out of the ordinary) restaurants locally. Although you have McD's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Chili's, Olive Garden, etc.

And the nightlife scene here gets started pretty darn late. I was in a place on New Year's at 12:30am, it was still pretty empty and didn't start to fill up til 2:30am!!!
Since we have to be up for MANDATORY ATTENDANCE (school-wide) at 8am, nightlife is pretty much weekends only.

I don't know maybe things will improve...
