Transfer Success

What's the success rate of transferring to another dental school. I know a 1st year at NYU (around a 3.4 gpa), who would like to move closer to home (significant other) in the southeast, preferrably UNC (his state school). Any schools that are very open to transfers? Any helpful replies would be appreciated.

From my research it is mostly a function of how many openings there are at the beginning of the second year class. So, if 5 people leave/drop out/fail out, then there are 5 spots for transfers. If 0 people left the class, then there are 0 spots for transfer. Of course, you need excellent grades and possibly an interview.
