Transfer to Drexel

Hello, I was wondering what will it take to transfer from a state sch to Drexel, such as numbers, activities, extra things I shld do etc.... I am a PA resident and got previously waitlisted at Drexel... I am currently considering to apply as a sec year transfer in the coming semester. Primarily because all my family are back in Philly and financially it will be better for me as I am currently paying two rents.....

You are paying 2 rents? Do you have your own family back home (meaning like spouse/children) or by family do you mean your parents, etc.? I just don't understand why you would continue to have to pay 2 rents--don't leases eventually expire? i don't know anything about transfers but if it comes down to it, I'm sure you could do a lot of your 3rd year rotations away in philly...plus there is always residency. And you have this summer coming up where you could go back home and chill/do research/whatever.

But--back to the question at hand--if you are going to do this transfer thing, you should call Drexel directly and ask how you can apply because I'm sure you have to do that soon. And you have to have some sort of good reason--because i would imagine neither school is going to like it if you want to move simply because you are homesick. Some compelling reasons I could imagine are: family illnesses, you have children back in philly, you absolutely could not afford to stay where you are now due to some sort of dire financial situation that could be solved by moving back home.

I've heard that Drexel is open, or more open than other schools, to transfers from both MD and DO schools as long as they have a spot in the class. Can't hurt to try and get your name in with the admissions office.

Hello, I am paying 2 rents because I am helping out my family back in Philly. So instead of channeling all my living expense at one place, I have to split it into 2 portions. I am currently in this MD program, doing well academically, but not really happy here due to a variety of reasons. The financial situation is burdening but I would be more willing to bite the bullet if other situations make my study here a more pleasant experience.... I emailed Drexel (being a week and no reply) and downloaded the forms from their website....

I was just wondering what kind of stats does it take to have a shoot at transfer... thanks

Does it HAVE to be Drexel or could you try other Philly area schools such as Jefferson, Temple or even UMDNJ and be a little closer?

out of those schools I think only Drexel accepts 2nd yr transfer.... I dont think temp even considers 3rd yr transfers anymore... my goal is to go back to Philly asap so Drexel probably is my best choice.. I was waitlisted there the previous cycle so I thought if I do well in my current sch, they shouldnt have any academic concerns at least when I apply... I hope so though

I seeeeee. It might be good to simply call the others and ask for verbal confirmation. Be sure to state your situation and all that. Drexel probably is your best bet, but it never hurts to find out whether a rule is hard set or to prevent tons of people from trying to transfer.

Temple takes 2nd year transfers, at least from my school. One of my classmates is now a 2nd year student there, we also had one transfer to Drexel.

that's strange as Temple's admissions website says "Temple University School of Medicine no longer considers applications for transfer or advanced standing."I emailed them and they told me the same thing >.<

If you need to be in Philadelphia, I would encourage you to apply for transfer to all of the medical schools in Philadelphia (and the greater Philadelphia metro area) not just one school. Whether or not you were wait listed at one particular school is not going to have any bearing on your being able to transfer. What will be crucial:

• Your grades and performance at your present school
• How compelling your reason for transfer.
• If the school accepts transfers and has a place for you.
• Backing of the deans from both schools so that the move can take place.

As you well know, transfers are not common nor automatic. Financial hardship is a pretty compelling reason for transfer but the school has to have a place for you (the reason for applying for transfer to more than one school if the option is there) and you have to have performed up to their standards.

Some schools don't have many transfer options until third year because students who are decelerated at a particular school, may have taken any open slots in second year. Good luck!

thanks for the info!!! I have not talked to any of the deans at my sch yet about my intention.... I am going to finish neuroscience and see how I do in it before making it official. It will be done by late Feb, I think it gives me plenty of room. If I don't get an A I really dont see myself having a very good chance at transferring. If somehow I don't make it to Drexel this year I will apply again in 3rd year when more options open up to me. Thanks for the info again!

Director Kelli from Drexel Univ College of Medicine just called this morning and offered me an acceptance to their 2nd yr class! YESSSS😱! 😍😱😱

The only difference is immunology. it is one of their 1st yr classes, if I decide to take up the offer, I will have to self-study for it! Lecture notes and video recordings are all online! Faculty is also available for consult.
