Transferred this past fall to a top 10 school...took all my BCPM classes at my prior 4 year university (c-3.99). Is there a need for me to take any upper level science classes prior to applying this June? I have strong, unique EC's, and would prefer to devote my attention to MCAT prep vs. upper level sciences. I'm a non-science major so I'd only be taking them to assure adcoms I can get A/A-'s in sciences at my current institution. Do I fall in the same category as transfers that took CC science classes that need to prove they can hack it at Uni? I moved from a school ranked outside the top 100 to one in the top 10...fwiw I have dreams of a top 15 acceptance...in a bit of a bind and feel that the MCAT should be priority #1,2,&3 right now.

MCAT should definitely be your priority IMO. I would also look into which schools you are interested in as some schools require a class or two of upper division biology courses. University of Arizona - Phoenix for one requires one upper division biology class along with physiology.

should add I'm planning on taking biochem some time senior year but feel it'd be a time sink in the lead up to the MCAT

Does University of Phoenix have a medical school now?

UA-Phoenix as opposed to UA-Tucson...

My home state is in the south and has multiple schools, I feel pretty good about my odds there ... I'm more concerned w/how the top ranked schools will view me

Oh, my bad. I knew about University of Phoenix, and when I think of AZ I think of Iced Tea and the Cardinals.

any opinions on this? The time commitment between humanities and hard science classes is so different...I wanna focus on the MCAT, but I don't want to get my app tossed b/c I haven't touched upper level sciences. Carrying a s-3.99 from my much easier former Uni

I found some of my humanities classes much harder than some science classes. My Fiction and Non-Fiction analysis classes were much more difficult and involved a lot more reading than many of my science classes.

My roommate has told me the same thing. I think it really varies from person to person... I majored in a humanities subject and got away with taking 24 unit quarters of humanities courses. I doubt I would have been able to do that with science courses at the time. Although interestingly medical school is kind of like taking 24 units of science classes, so maybe that's not true.

Although to be fair, science by nature, is a lot less reading than humanities classes. A lot of the humanities classes I took...doing the reading and writing a good paper was enough to get an A. Definitely not the case with my science classes.

This is exactly my experience...if you can write well and come up with a semi-interesting position you'll get an A in the humanities courses. Sciences not so much, and they're way more time consuming for me. I don't mind and I spent all last year carrying 3 sciences + labs but want to make sure I'm not neglecting MCAT prep. Anyone have an opinion on me needing to take upper level sciences b4 applying or is it cool to save biochem till my senior year and toss the app in there with no sciences at my current schoool. I want a strong app for the very top schools and don't wanna hurt my chances b/c of the lack of sciences here
