Hello,
I was talking with a surgeon who claimed if you wanted to (most probably wouldn't) and could find financing or just arrange very low financing (i.e. on personal savings for living cash and loans etc), after a 6 year integrated plastic surgery program a candidate could choose to commit to a GS program at the 4th year and do 2 to get the dual boarding in the same 8 years as you could if you did a GS then 3yr PRS fellowship.
I don't know if this is true or the realities about the financing issues. I tried to google and click around on ABMS and related organization sites, but no luck finding how the transfer of credits/years would work. Maybe it is completely up to the institutions and there is no set policy? Does anyone know?
Since there are other options besides general surgery such as ENT or orthopedic surgery which usually people would be more likely to complete THEN do the 3yr plastic surgery fellowship, but where you might want to do it the other way around... I'd be curious what people on here know about the possibility of getting credit through integrated years which can count toward other residencies, rather than just being limited to fellowship options. And the financial and other realities that might matter more than I realize. I'd be curious about peoples' input. Especially any URL's validating the policies that I just wasn't able to find myself tooling around.
Thank you!
