I'm not sure how many responses you will get since most of us "specialize" (if I may call it that) in assessing chances in terms of acceptance to Medical School.

Still, that being said, it looks like you have done a substantial amount of work in just one year, and I'm sure you have a great shot at transferring. I'm guessing you also have an above average SAT, since that will be a factor at this level.

I may be a bit biased in asking this but why Chapel Hill? Why not NC State which is better known for sciences (and easier to get into out of state) there's also ECU, Duke, and Wake Forest if you want a bigger school. Plus those three all have a med school associated with them (NC State doesn't) if that's a reason you liked Chapel Hill.
Also have you visited any of the campuses? They all have different personalities to them and you may find you fit in better at another.

As for chances of transferring, Im not sure how easy it is to transfer into UNC-CH but getting in out of state is notoriously difficult. (This goes for the med school as well..although you should be an NC resident by application time)

Keep in mind there's also UNC-Charlotte, greensborough, wilmington and probably more that I'm forgetting about.

I don't quite remember my exact SAT scores, however I know I had a 1200 out of 1600, and 1790 out of 2400.

Thanks for great and honest insight Ravensgal. As for the reasons against Duke, ECU, and Wake Forest...

Do you think my grades are good enough for Duke and Wake Forest? also the cost is an issue here.

I did see the campuses and I liked Chapel Hill and Duke... didn't get a chance to see the others.

Ravensgal if you were asked to give me a yes or no answer... do you think I would get into UNC Chapel Hill? 😛

A boost of my confidence...

I looked at the link you posted and it looks like you have a good shot. I didn't see anything there about in state and out of state so I suppose it may not apply as much for transfers.

Where in NC is your family moving to?
Also you could apply to more then one college in NC to have some safeties if being near your family is more of a priority.

UNC-CH is a really good school with a med school on their campus and it is a pretty campus. But it is more known for liberal arts and I have heard some people complain about their pre med advising. ( But then again people probably complain at any school). Also going to Chapel hill doesn't give you anymore advantage in getting into their med school then being an NC resident and going to another college in NC. But it doesn't hurt either.

I think you have a reasonable shot. Good luck!

Thank you Camaras 🙂
Ravensgal... My family is planning on moving somewhere close to Greensboro, and I want a college within commuting distance. What are some good safety schools I should consider? As in good I mean other reasonably competitive schools...

Well theres always UNC-Greensboro 😛
Isn't greensboro a little far to commute to Chapel Hill?
Greensboro is like 30 mins away from wake forest and an hour away from NC State

UNC sucks, that being said you should be good to transfer IMO

stay where you are. transferring is a female dog.

Ravensgal is UNC Greensboro a good, competitive school like UNC CH ?
Also- Why does UNC suck? are you not applying there? 🙂 Yes, I'm a little stalkerish.
Thanks for the advice guys 🙂

Honestly UNC-G is not competitive like UNC-CH. NC State is 🙂 and Wake and Duke.

Ok.. Ok... I will take NCS in to consideration as well. Which campus is most competitive and recognized?
Does anyone know if Wake Forest offers any scholarships and if so how much? If it's a decent chunk then I will definitely pick it over others.
Duke... lol i wish. am I right to scratch that off my list?

Some things to consider:

NCSU does not have a medical school. NCSU -1.

UNC and Duke have won way more NCAA Basketball Championships (Div I). UNC +1, Duke +1.

Duke has a horribly long, endless secondary. Duke -1.

Wake Forest has a cool name. Wake +1.

Summary:
NCSU -1
Wake +1
Duke 0
UNC +1

Crap we have a tie.

New information:

Tyler Hansbrough will suck in the NBA. UNC -1.

So: Wake > UNC > Duke > NCSU.

Honestly I would put Davidson and Wake at the bottom of the list. They are private schools that are outrageously expensive and not worth the cost, plus there is no way NO WAY Wake is better overall than UNC. My suggestion is try UNC and NCSU first and then DUKE, DAVIDSON, and WAKE. NCSU is very good in the sciences and it is true that any idiot can get in but they still have some really smart kids. You might want to try figuring out how long it will take you to get residency in NC and see which between NCSU and UNC will cost less. You won't be at a disadvantage by going to NCSU over UNC because percentage wise the UNC med school takes about the same amount from each school. Try to become a resident and you'll be in good shape for med schools if you keep your grades and ECs up.

Thanks for the great insight... do you honestly think that I am Duke-worthy? I mean are my current college GPA, EC's and SAT scores eligible? Also why are some people telling me that NCSU is not even in the same tier as UNC?

Being honest here - I cannot believe this thread is still active.

Me neither. Didn't expect this but I need the help. So... back to the topic... why are people telling me that NCSU is not even the same tier as UNC?
and am I Duke worthy?

How much does it cost to apply for transfer? I feel like the easiest thing to do is to apply to all of them.

I agree I think I will apply to NCSU, UNC, Duke, and maybe UNC Greensboro or something...
Does any one know how colleges determine whether or not an incoming student is a resident of the state the college is in?

I do not. I also think you should call up each school (its only 3 or 4) and talk to them. Get some information directly from them - it will really speed up this process for you.

because they are douches

Haha. Agreed. Honestly, I almost went to NCSU because they gave me a full ride but decided to go somewhere closer to home. NCSU is a very good school in the sciences and has a terrific program. Overall maybe UNC is very slightly ahead but in the sciences there is no way you can convince me they aren't equal because they are. They produce the same percentage of med students and NCSU produces TONS of engineers way more than UNC. You are going to be studying mostly the sciences so that's what I base it on. UNC may have a bit more national recognition but that won't matter and NCSU is recognized nationally for it's sciences. You might get into DUKE but the problem is that they have too many smart kids taking up too many scholarships. Unless you or your parents are willing to pay the full tuition I wouldn't plan on going there even if I get in (and seeing that your parents are desi then I doubt they will pay for it, most desi's are too cheap). Back to my point. Focus on getting in at UNC and NCSU and compare the financial aid packages. Trust me on this, if you go to NCSU and do well and keep you your ECs then you will have no trouble getting into UNC med school and will have as fair of a shot as a UNC grad to get into DUKE med school considering you do well on your MCAT. Actually you will have as fair of a shot getting into both schools as a UNC grad. They are 2 of the top 25 med schools in the nation so you can't ask for any better than that. Go where the money is, that's what I did and I have no regrets about it and it hasn't decreased my chances at an acceptance in med school (I'm in the process of applying).

lmao...NCSU admits any ****** with half a brain..just saying.

UNC>Davidson>DUke>all others..because your taxes are going to UNC...well provided you are a NC resident

Agreed. Their statistics show they admit 60 percent of their applicants, while UNC on the other hand only admits 13 percent.

I don't know if the percentages you mentioned were referring to me but I'll respond just in case. I didn't mean acceptance into undergraduate. I thought I was clear about that because almost any ****** can get into NCSU but NCSU still have a very very good program. Plenty of very smart kids end up going there also. They have some of the best professors. The percentages I was referring to was from undergraduate to Medical school. UNC takes about the same percentage of students from UNC as they do from NCSU. The reason is that UNC medical school has absolutely no obligation to admit UNC students. They do however have an obligation to admit NC residents which pay for their program. UNC doesn't care where they get the students from as long as they meet their standards and are in state.

Also the percentage of applicants a school admits has absolutely no bearing on the quality of the school. UMich (50%) and Ga. Tech, UWash (64% each) have fairly high acceptance rates but NOBODY in their right mind would consider these anything less than phenomenal programs.

Hope this helped,

Well I don't know about UNC and their grading system but I know that NCSU accepts a lot of people. But that isn't an indication of how good or bad a school is because it is still and very good school.

The important thing to remember is that calculus is calculus and organic chem is organic chem no matter where you take it.
Honestly it doesn't matter if you go to Harvard if you get awful grades. Go somewhere you are comfortable and know you will be successful at.
NCSU lets in more people than UNC, but UNC has a weaker science program than NCSU.
UNC has an awesome communications school while NCSU doesn't even have one (that I am aware of).
Every school has its pros and cons, its where you are comfortable and happy that matters.

PS. the Dean of Admissions of UNC med school is an NCSU grad 😛
