This is probably a ridiculous question, but say you have a volunteering gig that is a one hour drive away one-way. Do you include the 2 hours trip along with your volunteering time on AMCAS since you legitimately couldn't be doing anything else during that period? I'm just curious, and I don't mean to be too overanalytical about this.

i would say not. cause in that case, you could probably sleep 8 hours the night before and say that you slept in order to have a good performance for your volunteer work

No, I would not count the commute time into the number of volunteering hours. Yes, you are on your way and can't do any other activity, but it would seem like padding the hours to count the +2 hours in with the bona fide volunteer work.

Volunteer time starts when you sign in and ends when you sign out.

Ask yourself the question: If a member of the adcom called the volunteer group, how many hours would they report? Something makes me think they would not include your driving time.

If that were the case I would have volunteered halfway across the country. Driving would have been a much better-spent time than volunteering.

Quite frankly, I think I should get paid for my transit time to/from work.

Considering that I wouldn't change out of PJs if it wasn't for work, they should pay for my 30 min of prep time before I leave the house too.

I think it's time to renegotiate my wage 🙂

Generally, when it comes to mileage reimbursement/working hours (which in your case is the standard I would compare with) is if you are driving to or from work, it doesn't count, unfortunately. But, any driving after you've clocked in (and before you've clocked out) would count.

If you are summoned to come to work/volunteer outside normal working hours (perhaps to deal with an emergency) the driving required to and from work in this case often counts towards your total hours.

Unless you're a doctor of course... 🙁
