hi guys

I am new to the forum. I am a licensed PT in state of NJ. I have my undergrad education from India (Bachelors in PT) and entry level masters in physiotherapy (MPT) from India followed by Advanced Masters in Orthopedic Physical therapy (MSPT) from USA and Doctorate in PT (DPT) also from USA. I would like to get in to Osteopathic Medicine in UMDNJ, New jersey. I saw in their website that any candidate applying for D.O should take physics, chem, biology, english, math. In India after the completion of high school we go directly in to professional school (which in my case is bachelors in PT) and there is no pre-reqs we do there. With my PT credentials, would I still need to take the pre-reqs or will it be waived. I already have anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, english and basic physics in my PT undergrad curriculum.

If in case I need to take the pre-reqs will the AAOM allow online courses for pre-reqs since I am a full time PT working up to 50hrs/wk.

Any suggestions will be very highly appreciated. Kindly post your comments

You will have to take the pre-med pre-reqs and take the MCAT to apply. Schools will probably take the english and physics classes from your undergrad, talk to the schools for specifics.

Schools will not waive pre-reqs, even if you're a practicing PT with a DPT.
You still need to fulfill the pre-reqs that each schools have set out (some have more requirements than other). You still need to take the MCAT.

Whether the admission committee will accept online courses - I dunno. If you have never taken an actual physical course in the US, fulfilling your prereqs via online may not be a good idea - you need to demonstrate to the admission committee that you can handle the rigors of medical schools - taking all your prereqs online is not the best way to demonstrate it.

This thread would be more appropriately answered in the pre-osteo forum ...(moving thread)

online courses<<community college<state school=<top school

so basically considering just how competitive medicine (incl. DO) is, taking courses online is definitely a very poor idea. you don't want to handicap yourself that way at the beginning of the application process.

I'm not an expert, but I'm sure that schools will not wave requirements. However, they may recognize equivalent credits if you can transfer credits from your previous course work in India.

If you want to be a practicing DO in NJ, you don't need to attend DO school in only NJ. DOs are able to work nationally regardless of where they attend school, so don't limit yourself to where you apply.

I would suggest getting specific information by contacting school admission offices about their prerequisite for courses, and also AAMC for their prerequisites for taking the MCATs.

My 2 cents. 🙂
