Hi guys, I would really appreciate some input on selecting my electives. I'm off to DC for my army translational year. Can anyone comment on which electives are known to be strong, which are weak, which are time demanding, and which are time-friendly? I'm generally interested in PM&R, pain, pulm, cardio, and radiology. But I would appreciate comments on any that comes to mind.

Thank you~

I can't speak so much for DC, but I can tell you it's in your best interest to obviously rotate in what you want to do as early as possible. I'm at TAMC, but am categorical derm at Bethesda next year. My fellow interns who had to reapply needed to get their application in EARLY, so you really need to rotate through your preferred specialty by September or at least in October. If you already have matched, do outpatient rotations including derm, allergy, pathology, ect. You'll need the time off, trust me.

If you were interested in pulm or cardio you should have selected an IM internship as you could still do anesthesia (for pain) or rads out of that (to be honest maybe PM&R as well, but I don't know on that one).

What I would recommend is if you are interested in PM&R, Pain, and rads and have 3 elective months you should do a rotation in each of those. Do early the one you are more interested in to enhance your GME2 application for this year.

Echoing above, make sure TY PD knows what you want to go into, so he can make sure you get to rotate in it very early in the year.

Thank you so far for your replies. I should clarify that I was pre-selected for anesthesiology, so won't be going through another application process. In light of this, any advice on electives at Bethesda? (i.e. which ones are time friendly?)

Thanks!
