Transitional program with unfair requirements!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was rejected/denied an interview from a TY program because I do not have my Step 2 CS results available. I already took the CS but was shocked when the program asked for the results to consider you for an interview. Is this legal?

Yes. They can ask for whatever exam results they want. It's becoming much more common to ask for the results of Step 2 CK and CS especially by competitive specialties and programs.

Wow. That's bizarre. You don't hear that much. Maybe it is becoming more common, but I haven't heard it.

Yeah they can ask for whatever they'd like. Obviously it narrows their pool of candidates but I'm sure with competitive TYs that isn't a problem.

Are there any TYs or prelims that people can name off the top of their heads that need Step 2 CK just to get an interview? Given my Step 1 score is high enough that my advanced programs won't be worried about me passing Step 2, I will not have taken it, much less have gotten any results, in time for interview invitations.

I would be careful about your timing on step 2 CK, I would be sure that you have your score back early on during the interview season. I think you will find that most of the best programs are looking for you to do much more than just pass, regardless of how you did on Step 1. Last year while on the interview trail I found that programs were very concerned with how well applicants did or did not do on step 2 and most were expecting the same or better performance than step 1. Having seen the selection of applicants from "behind the scenes" this year I can attest that step 2 scores are very important, at least at my program. Just a friendly word of caution.

I'd like to co-sign the post above. Do not sleep on Step2 CK or CS. Also, fail CS, and you better be able to prove that you had a grand-mal seizure or an SAH smack in the middle of your exam. A friend of mine is currently being skewered on the interview trail because of a failed CS. Many programs have told him that he won't even be ranked. So take Step 2 seriously...don't be a shmuck. STUDY and PREPARE WELL.

Umm.....how do you fail CS. Me and most everyone I know did not study or take it seriously and we passed with flying colors.

I hypothesize that if your friend taken CS "seriously," they would have failed regardless.

You show up and pretend to be a doctor. Obviously if you just walk around, don't talk to the patient or ask them to take their pants off, you're gonna fail. The pass rate for US Seniors must be something like 99.5%.

98% for US MD's actually which is surprisingly low. I mean imagine how screwed you are in the match, and it's happening to 1 in 50 grads.

Why would they even in invite them for an interview if they won't rank them? Maybe they have problems with basic social interactions like fake doctor time and interviews....

I guess opinions about this vary, but I have heard an opinion different from yours from my school administrators and potential programs I'd be interested in.

If anyone has specific prelims or TYs that would absolutely require it, names would be much appreciated. Thanks!
