Forgive me if this is a stupid question. When applying to rads programs, it would obviously be best to match with one attached to a transitional year program. Do people who are trying to go into rads usually apply to just transitional programs as well as backup(I realise transitional isn't easy).
I guess basically what I am asking is, ifyou don't match rads the first year but match a lone transitional you, do you just enter the match again for the PGY2 rads spot the next year?

How does this work..

first of all, it's not really obvious at all that it would be best to match to a categorical rads program. very few radiology programs offer "attached" transitional years, so if you really don't want to limit yourself to those programs.

referring to your second question, then yes, if you don't match to a rads program, then you could complete an internship and reapply with the idea that the LORs and/or research you do during internship could tip the balance in your favor. or, you could take a year off to concentrate on something worthwhile that will improve your CV. keep in mind though, if you can't/don't match into rads, then you're probably not going to make it into a transitional year program; you'll more likely end up doing preliminary medicine or surgery.
