Hello all, I have a weird question.

I applied to an acgme FM residency program in a state that I'm not in love with, so I won't be pursuing this at all but I wanted to hear some others thoughts.

This is a direct quote from the rejection they sent me "Our program requires DO applicants to complete a transitional year in an osteopathic program prior to applying for a first year position".

My question to everyone is has anyone heard of such a thing before? I have never heard of DO students having to complete a transitional year for FM.

It’s not logical but if they just really don’t want DOs, that’s on them

Thanks.

That's what I was thinking but I want to get the thoughts of experts.

That sure is an interesting way of saying "osteopathic students are not eligible to apply for our residency program".

You mind letting us know the name of this prestigious residency?

I suspect that this was in PA, OK, or FL (and maybe MI, but they have reportedly abandoned the requirement). By transitional year, they probably mean AOA TRI or TY with Osteopathic focus. I've heard of ACGME programs (not usually FM programs, but not unheard of) requiring DOs to complete a TRI before applying or joining the program, because technically for DOs to get permanent licensure from the DO state licensing board they are required to complete an AOA TRI or use Res 42 to to demonstrate they have "AOA equivalent" training.

Some programs in those states actually require you to have completed the TRI prior to applying to the categorical program. It makes no logical sense for them to do this, because DO state boards do allow DOs to train (and attain a training license) in those states without an AOA intern year, they just can't get the permanent, full license. The only exception would be that some programs actually require individuals to be fully licensed prior to finishing the program, in which case those DOs would not be able to fulfill that requirement.

The whole thing is their way of getting out of the hassle of doing Res 42, which is stupid, and if anything is a sign of a program that is NOT supportive or at best does not understand the process.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it though. There are plenty of FM programs in a lot of other states.

That is some prestigious FM program there just to learn to convince non-compliant pts to take their CV and diabetes meds.

As @hallowmann surmised, it's in Florida. Specifically, University of Florida Morsani Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

And as everyone probably guessed. No. I'm not going to decline all the interviews I currently have, apply to and receive 1 year of AOA training just to apply to this one program.

Thanks for taking the time to write all of that out, @hallowmann . I had thought that all of the Res 42 stuff had already been dealt with based on the past threads that I've read on this site. Hence, why I need this website because there's no other way for me to learn about what's going on. Med school certainly doesn't explain it.
