Transitional Year Programs??

Does anyone have information on what they have heard are good transitional year programs? In terms of location, elective time, and an overall relaxed year. It seems that most of this info is from word of mouth, so anything you know is greatly appreciated.

I think the TY program at UCLA Harbor is completely reasonable. I believe Santa Barbara is Prelim (ther offer surgery and IM internships). I have heard good things about the San Diego TY program.

If anyone is interested in living in the midwest, Gundersen Lutheran in La Crossse is an awesome program. There are five months of non-call electives (I got my top 5 choices for electives) in pretty much everything imaginable. Then there are two more months of no call in Ambulatory and ER (no overnight shifts).
The above is fairly standard for good ty programs, but additional things that gundersen has are:
- very supportive atmosphere
- attendings enjoy teaching
- 2 bedroom townhouses provided for $525/month rent with all utilities included, plus central air, free cable and high-speed internet. These are right next to the hospital and very-well maintained.
- beautiful location between the Mississippi river and the mountains/bluffs with huge parks, nature reserves and trails everywhere.
- conveniently located between UW Madison, U Minn, Mayo and Iowa
- La Crosse is a really fun city with festivals nearly every weekend and a bustling downtown.

There are 10 TY's, but they may be increasing the number. They matched in their top 16 last year, but it's still possible to match here (heck, I did) since it's still relatively unknown.

The University of Hawaii Transitional Residency Program is absolutely the best. Location, electives, atmosphere... I highly suggest that you spend a year in Hawaii. If you absolutely have to stay on the mainland it is hard to beat Resurrection in Chicago.

Consensus is that Saint Vincents had/has an awesome program - although this may have changed now.

Other noted ones are in Reading, PA - Some have said that Atlantic something in NJ isn't bad.

Not too much I know about in northeast. If you find something in the northeast, esp. the tri-state area, be sure to update us!

Effin eh! 😱 This process is so expensive...can you imagine matching into ophtho and then not getting a prelim spot. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Everyone at my school is against transitional, so I have no guidance whatsoever. I refuse to do a medicine or surgery prelim though, as I can't see myself doing more than 1 month of ICU, no matter what!

I'm applying to 25-30 ophtho programs...How many transitionals do you guys think I should apply to?

I read about it online and it sounds pretty tough...one might as well do a real prelim if you know what I mean.

John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth, Texas is an amazing transitional year

Schedule is this:

2 months surgery, during which you are usually out around noon if you are not on call or in clinic (call is q4).

3 months medicine - which is q5 and you do not show up until noon on call day. Also no outpatient clinic responsibility on these months

2 months pediatrics - I hear you get 2-3 weekends off each month and call is q5

2 months ER - interns get between 12-18 12 hour shifts per month. You get a lot of time off

1 month Family Medicine, which is no call, all weekends off, and 8:30 - 4/5 on weekdays (This month is very easy)

2 electives in whatever you want, no call and hours based on elective

What I feel sets this program apart from others is that you learn a lot from this internship while having a really nice schedule. Even on Surgery and Medicine I have a lot of free time.

my IM prelim program only had 5 weeks of ICU. it also afforded me 12 weeks of elective time (4 of which i spent in hawaii) in addition to 4 weeks of vacation. there are some good IM prelim spots out there.

Fyi, for those of you applying to Hawaii's transitional year, I received this note:
"While reviewing your ERAS application, we noticed that your personal statement did not address two of our requirements: please add an additional paragraph to your original personal statement, explaining specifically why you areinterested in joining our Program and your future specialty"

Their 12-weeks of consecutive Q3 call on surgery looks like fun; maybe I'll put that as my reason for applying.

i did my preliminary year at kaiser los angeles medical center (kasier sunset). you won't go wrong either at kaiser or olive view. i know a lot of people that did their prelim year at olive view and were very happy.

Interviewed at Lehigh Valley transitional in allentown, PA. Apparently, the residents there are pretty unhappy with the program. They say it used to be great but now the program is average at best. The transitional residents are treated poorly there. They recommended Reading, Albert Einstein philly, Atlantic Health, Mercy in Pitt, St. Barnabas, Riverside and Brockton as programs that are better. Definitely got a bad vibe. Wow, I am actually surprised. I interviewed there and the residents seem very happy and love the program. Could you please explain why the residents are now unhappy in the transitional program?
