Hi, i'm a third year student that's interested in Gas. I had a question about the internship year. I looked up "transitional year" on FREIDA for California and it only showed approx. 8 programs, none of which included the big universities (ie UCLA, USC, UCSF, etc.).

How does it work when you apply for anesthesia and other specialites that require a internship year? I'm interested in doing a medicine intern year, where can i find the info for how many med. intern spots there are in CA?

Also, as anesthesia is super competitive nowadays, if hypothetically one were to apply to community-based IM programs as a "backup", is there any way that the gas programs you applied to would find out? Have people done this in the past? I'm assuming students that wanted to go into ultracompetitive residencies like Derm, Rads, have applied to backup fields before. Any words of guidance on if i should or how i should handle the "back-up" situation would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!

First, a 'transitional' intern year is different from a medicine intern year. If you're interested in doing a medicine intern year, its known as a Preliminary Medicine year. Many programs with IM residencies have prelim spots as well. Check FREIDA out, searching for prelim. internal medicine programs. Second, if you apply to a 'back-up' specialty, anesthesia programs will not know about it, so don't worry. Its not uncommon for applicants to apply for back-up positions, esp. if he/she is not the strongest applicant. Good luck!
