I will be applying for the upcoming Rads match and had, up until recently, settled on doing an IM prelim year. In recent conversations with some of the residents at my institution, several recommended transitional programs over preliminary years, stating that their varied nature jibes well with the broad scope of knowledge necessary for radiology. I was just wondering if anyone else out there has an opinion one way or another? If you did a transitional year, did you feel like you were just doign a redux of third-year medical school?

Thanks in advance for the input...

I would go for the cushest year you can get. In most cases that will be a TY but there are some TYs out there that are tougher than other prelims so assess each one an individual basis. But CUSH is the key. Just my opinion...

I like the word CUSH..."Hey Cush is on the big TV again!"

I think that good TY programs beat prelim medicine programs any day. Because good transitional year programs have flexibility and options. They have lots of elective time so you can tailor your year as YOU desire it; not what you are forced to do.

Second, most good transitional year programs have good ancillary services. Also, some transitional year programs, you are an extra hand. Your presence is especially appreciated by your fellow interns, residents and attendings (if you can handle your share of the load).

Some TY are bad you have to just check them out. I saw some which are 2 months electives with 10 months surgery/IM or they restrict your electives.

In any case in general TY> prelim IM> prelim surg in terms of lifestyle and knowledge obtained.

Thanks all for the input. I'll definitely do some research into finding a CUSH (but educational) transitional program.

Of course, you can do pathology and avoid this whole issue whatsoever.

just kidding...best of luck on finding a cush TY program.
