I just started surgery and trauma call is awesome! In case you were wondering, yes these are the kinds of people we get to take care of on trauma call:

Man Stabbed Due to Not Knowing of Beyonce & Jay-Z's Marriage

Not him exactly, but the stories of people you do take care of are equally as awesome. I won't share due to patient privacy.

For all you 1st and 2nd years, hang in there 3rd and 4th year are as awesome as you think.

There are several fields of medicine that I don't think I'd want to go into, but I really look forward to experiencing them in 3rd and 4th years and am willing to use my electives to do it. Among them are transplant, forensic anything, and EMS type stuff. I understand that we do ride-alongs with ambulance crews during our ER rotation, and I really want to do some life flight stuff too. It seems sometimes people can lose sight of just how cool parts of medicine really are. I mean come on, they put this stuff in TV and in movies for a reason!

Had I not gotten into medical school I think flight nurse would have been the next best thing.

durty,
I am legitimately happy for you. It seems as if the responses you have gotten thus far have been less than congratulatory on your new found happiness with trauma call. I have always been excited to rotate on a trauma service and am truly looking forward to it during my third year. I hope you continue to have similar positive experiences on the rest of your rotations to come.

PS- are you rotating at hospitals in Columbia? I see your signature mentions the Gamecocks. I worked in the OR at Providence (before med school), where you probably won't rotate, but I saw some really awesome stuff there. I also know a lot of those surgeons and they are really top-notch clinicians. Best of luck to you!

Trauma service during MS-III surgery at my school is mostly scrambling to fill out the copious paperwork on all the patients while your resident forgets about you and doesn't page you when a legit trauma rolls in.

I got a pager and went to every call while overnight. Granted, my friend and I were white clouds. We averaged 1-2 traumas a night at a level one center.
