I have a young adult pt with depression and anxiety who is having a great deal of difficultly with sensory sensitivity to sounds, such as not being able to go to the movie theater (because people eat), deal with the sound of his roommates chewing gum, and multiple similar distressing circumstances. He does not have ASD. Curious what type of treatment you would recommend for this, exposure therapy like you would treat a phobia? He says this has been present his whole life. Thanks!

Are you sure he doesn't have Autism? Did he have an IEP? How did he get through high school?

I heard about this website a while back:

I heard an interview with this therapist on a CBT podcast episode about misophonia and the treatment for it. The episode is here:

I have not done a thorough review of the research in this area or on treatments but my read is that things are still very much in an experimental stage of finding what may be effective and understanding the magnitude of improvement. I hope this is helpful in some way.

I shadowed a psychologist that had an adult patient with misphonia who was misdiagonsed as OCD by his psychiatrist. He was given SSRI's by his psychiatrist and reported improvement of his misphonia.

It was an interesting case that I thought might help guide you.
