Treatment of mercury poisoning

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've seen this in a practice question for Hg poisoning, and dimercaprol was the answer.

EDTA, although, yes, it can be used to chelate many different heavy metals, is primarily just used for lead, for the sake of the USMLE.

The big thing is that succimer is oral whereas EDTA is IM or IV, which is another reason why succimer is given to kids for Pb poisoning.

Once chelation has occurred, the complex is excreted renally (which makes sense).
