I'm curious to hear peoples' opinions of triple board programs (psych/peds/child psych). I am a 3rd year and considering applying to these programs but get mixed reviews...some practicing child psychiatrists that i have talked to seem to think positively about it, others seem to think that (1) it makes one 'jack of all trades, master of none', and (2) it may be too intense and packed and not enough time with electives.

has anyone been considering or interviewing in these programs?

Thanks!

i was considering applying to those programs, but ultimately decided against it because of negative feedback that i heard from both psychiatry and peds attendings. basically i got a lot of the "jack of all trades" argument from both sides. when i put it all together, it seemed like the bottom line was that the triple board program is great for those wanting to go into biological research in child psychiatry - you get the necessary psych, with a good peds background.

I think there was a thread on this a while ago.

Anyhow, I know a couple of triple boarded folks and they tend to agree...If they had to do it over again, they'd probably just do psych with a child fellowship. Most of that decision seems to stem from money. The example one provided was that so much money could be made through simple child assessment and treatment psychiatrically, the billing and actual usefullness of treating infections, providing immunizations, and the like (common pediatric complaints) literally didn't make it worth the time to do, since those billable hours could be much better spent in the child psych aspect of practice.

I've heard that for most triple board grads, most just go on to practice child psych, hardly ever any pediatrics, because it doesn't make sense in terms of salary and demand.
However, I have heard that there is big demand for triple board grads in terms of C/L services and inpatient departments.

I think you have to decide what kind of person you are - one that likes to learn things relatively fast and not so in depth or if you are the opposite. BUt it's a great thought to combine peds and child psych.
