Number of my friends are thinking of dental schools. But looking at the dental clinics' overcrowded presence in my state CA - like liquor stores as the saying goes - I can understand some of the dentists I know going out of business. For example, there are 3 large dental clinics across the street within one block! But I also hear situation is different in other states. But for the people who have families and friends in CA, it will be difficult. What are your thoughts or facts? I know one dentist who works in Houston, TX and is doing very well right out of the school.

A dentist can practice in any state, even California, and do VERY well. The location may not be in a downtown area, and may have to be 1-2 hours away from a large urban area, but you can still do well.

On occasion we hear of people not making it, but that is by and large due to the fact that they are poor businessmen, lack clinical skills, or have chosen a poor location. Very rarely is it due to the actual fact that dentistry isn't in demand.

some areas ARE oversaturated.

..just do you research and dont open up shop in an area with 5 dentists for every mouth.

There will always be room for GOOD one

In his inagural address after being instated as the current President of the Ct State Dental Association, Dr Bob Schriebman sated the following about the future practice of dentistry in Connecticut: "By 2015 50% of the current practicing dentists in Connecticut (there's about 2500 of us) will have retired from practice. Currently 2/3rd's off all graduates from New England dental schools do not practice in New England. The future of the profession is very bright in Connecticut!"

Short version, this is a great profession to be heading into!
