so some lady came, who was a representative from AUA (American University of Antigua), and the discussion was about residency placements.

she had a chart showing how US residencies (allopathic ones, that is) look first at US allopathic students to fill spots, then Foreign US Modeled Schools like AUA and the Big 4 Caribbean, and then osteopathic, and then other non US based foreign schools

but i felt like osteopathic schools must get preference for allopathic residencies over any offshore school. was she just flat out wrong?

I don't feel like searching for the definite proof right this second, but Im pretty sure I've seen it before and that is flat out wrong. I guess they can say whatever they want though.

Like the above poster, I don't feel like tracking down the stats (if I were in the mood to do actual work, I'd be doing something constructive like studying, working on an M&M presentation I have to give, the CME article I'm supposed to be writing, or the pharmacology book chapters I told someone I'd review). If anyone disagrees and can show me convincing proof otherwise, I might be more inclined to searching the literature.

All things being equal, based on several things I've seen, the odds favor USMDs>USDOs> US-born foreign grads> non-US born foreign grads.

There are cetainly going to be exceptions. The US hospitals that take Caribbean students for clinical rotations and are more familiar and comfortable with them may be better for USFGs than for USDOs. Also, some programs may have USFG faculty, which may tend to skew things in their favor.

However, I think overall the AUA lady is using incorrect information to sell her product.

Dont forget that we have our own residencies which nobody else can touch. This basically gurantees you a residency, The caribies cannot offer that. It also gurantees that DO's will get into competetive specialties.

That's funny. American University of Antigua? Never heard of it. Never met any graduates from it.

If you want a good laugh, go to their website and click on their NRMP match results. The funny part is they say that of the "eligible" students, 100% matched. However, they fail to tell you that the class had only 9 students, and you can assume that since only the "eligible" students matched, that not all of the 9 matched. The school was operational "less than three years ago" (from January 2007) and they already have matched students for this year. Is that possible? (I'm too tired to try to figure it out). See this: http://www.auamed.org//med/News_Upd...Semester/Students_Begin_January_Semester.html

Statistics from the most recent match show that ~70% of DOs who apply to ACGME programs match, whereas ~50% FMGs/carribean grads match.

Well, she's not exactly an unbiased source, is she? She wants you to go to AUA instead of an osteopathic school. I think it's interesting, too, how she's trying to slide AUA in there with the "big 4" Caribbean schools. Last I checked AUA did not have California approval, so it's not an equivalent school to any of the "big 4" schools.

Nope. DO's are ahead of all foreign schools. She LIED.
