Try my luck with next application cycle or pursue SMP?

Every single school you have listed is a reach. Why is your post bac a 3.5 ? It should much higher, especially if you were trying to impress ADCOMS. Your last MCAT is excellent but AMCAS recommends that schools average multiple MCAT scores. Some do and some don’t. Why aren’t there any DO schools on your list. Your GPAs are low for DO but you might get lucky with your last MCAT.

Does your cumulative GPA, and Science GPA include your Post bacc courses?

Ah I see thank you for the insight. My first semester in my postbac I did not do as well as I had hoped. So at best right now i would not really have a chance for MD and even then I might be a long shot for DO? Considering this is there anything I can still do regarding my GPA?

Postbacc courses are still undergrad courses so they would be included in your overall GPA, it would be helpful if you could calculate what your actual cumulative and science gpa are.

In my opinion I would say its a long shot for MD but a decent chance at DO because of the high MCAT. But again with the real cGPA and sGPA it'd be easier to advise.

The Postbac I took was one where I took graduate level sciences like Physio/Histo, would those still be included? If I did, it would be a 3.19sGPA and 3.18 cGPA.

Apply to every one of your state MD and apply to a lot of DO schools and you should get a few interview invites. Yes you're not the most competitive but schools have upper and lower ranges for GPA and MCAT scores for a reason-- not every admitted student will have the best stats. If you already took graduate level science course I think an SMP would be a waste of money. A valuable experience but very expensive. Apply early and don't minimize the importance of every single essay you write. Use MSAR to pick your out of state schools very wisely.

I see, then no those wouldn't count towards your undergrad GPA. Again your best chances are with DO schools for sure. As for MD it is unlikely but still possible. I agree with tammyp buy the MSAR and apply broadly this coming cycle heavily focused on DO, and a few MD schools in which your GPA is as close as possible to their 10th percentile, and where your MCAT is as close as possible to their 90th percentile and you might get some schools to bite. As it stands based on AAMC data, an optimistic approximation of your chances at MD (assuming that your MCAT is not averaged, which not all schools do and you can find this out on their website or call specific schools and ask) you have a 40% chance at MD. If your score is averaged then your chances drop to about 18%.

I am not as familiar with chances at DO but with that high MCAT I'm sure you will get at least a couple interviews.

@Goro any advice?

  1. B.S ChemE from State University - cGPA: 3.11 and sGPA: 3.09. PostBac GPA: 3.5
  2. First two attempts at MCAT were 504/502. Scored 518 on my last attempt.
  3. State of Residence: Virginia
  4. Asian-American
  • Clinical: 2000+ hours working as a ED scribe. 150+ hours shadowing in a Orthopedics along with a Hematology/Oncology clinic
  • Research: Project intern for BAE systems in research involving developing pharmaceutical nitroglycerin for medical applications for my senior capstone project.
  • Non-Clinical Experience: Coach for Special Olympics Basketball in my university community for four years. Involved in numerous community service projects for multiple Asian American student organizations during undergrad. Summer Camp Counselor for Chinese Community School four consecutive years. Tutoring for Alpha Chi Sigma Chem Fraternity and Mentorship for American Institute ChemE's.
  • Past year was invited by Shanghai Tourism board to participate in a Film workshop and documented traveling across southeastern China. Have had some of my photos featured by numerous travel photography accounts.
Currently I'm worried that my GPA is still somewhat on the low side to be competitive for MD schools. This is a tentative school list that I have currently but I'm not too sure if there should be other schools in this range that I can apply to or if I can go for a few reaches as well. I haven't ruled out pursuing a SMP either if needed.

Nearly all of the SDners who shared with me tales of their reinvention had GPAs of 3.7+ in their post-bac, so I'm not confident that you'll have much luck with MD schools, except maybe with VCU and EVMS. Va tech might be doable IF you're from the rural western parts of VA.

You'll be fine for any DO school.
