Ok my latest story-
Finally decided to take 2 pre-rec classed at the same time .Classes start 1-23-06..... Single mom work 45 hrs /week and shadow 5 hours /week too!

Here's the prob...

Since I work in the IT field I coudn't tell the boss that I'm going into dental...i told him that I was taking some science based classes.
NOW he wants me to get my CCNA ( cisco certification) kinda hard.
I already have a BS Accounting and 1 yr MS towards Comp Science.

I wake up at 4 go to work at 6 -class from 2-3.30 ... go back to work. leave at 5 pm- go get the kids and go to a 6-7.30 class -finally go home and die.
9 wait not yey- help the kids read Pinoccio and Old Yeller ugh!)

I really am not interested in a work promotion I just wanna coast...I need to focuse on my sience pre-recs to bring up my crappy GPA.

HELP I'M GOING Crazy. Any ideas...😱 🙁 :scared:

My salery is pretty good. I really need to keep this job till i get into DS. I thought maybe I should try to be a D -Assistant BUT they only pay 10-15 $/hr.....We'll be out on the street at that rate .....
Too much going on....thnx

I guess you'll be used to the long hours by the time you start dental school. 😀 Have you tried talking to your boss about cutting down on the hours? 45 hours/wk is already a lot in my mind (then again I'm really lazy), so having that on top of shadowing, taking classes, and raising a family is just crazy (but very admirable). 🙂

If possible get a job with some down time, or at least a long lunch. I normally get at least an hour, normally more to study. Graveyards help, but then you need a sitter which can get expensive if you don;t have some helpful friends. Good luck, you can do it!

Ok, If im not mistaken, your boss will probably pay for your CCNA certification. I know that the test is hard but I also know that it is worth it. In my opinion if you have a good future in the company in which you are working now, and a good sallary which will even get better after getting that cisco certification, why the change of career?is it for the money or you just dont like your field? One of my friends is also an IT major and is studying for the cisco certification, he always makes fun of me by saying that he will be making twice the money a dentist makes in a couple of years. So im confused. Dental school while raising a family, that is gonna be tough, but yet I admire your determination. Good luck with everything. you will succeed in whatever. 🙂

If your only problem is that he now wants you to get certified, tell him you will but once your other classes are over. Your boss can obviously see how busy you are and how you couldn't possibly do anything extra right now... And I'm assuming you haven't yet taken the DAT or applied to schools, right? Which means that you'll be at that job for quite some time before D-school. So my advice is, keep stringing him along by telling him that you'll do it once you get some more time. Tell him you're not willing to give up those classes you're taking now... you enjoy them... Believe me, once you take the DAT, life slows down quite a bit so you might be able to fulfill your promise to him then.

Your other alternative would be to become a dental assistant, which would give you great experience. But I'm a single person barely making ends meet as an assistant, although I'm in FL where they don't pay as much as they do in the rest of the country. If you could get a job as an assistant at a reasonable salary, I'd do that instead if you're totally sure you want dentistry.

If not, stick with the great salary you have now and do your best to string your boss along until after the DAT.

:luck:

Your friend is mistaken. The average salary for IT folks in my area is in the 50's. Great salary, for sure, but it's definitely not on par with a DDS. Add in the stress of working in a field which is steadily being outsourced overseas, typically long hours, and the political BS of working in a large corporate setting and you can see how the grass would look greener on the DDS side of the fence.

To the OP: I was in a similar situation last spring taking two classes, studying for the DAT, working 40+ hours, wedding planning, and shadowing 1/2 day a week. It's incredibly overwhelming at first, but you'll get used to it. Just keep in mind it's only 16 weeks and the semester will be over. Good luck!

Your wrong as well my friend. I know several people in the IT field who make over 6 figures. What field are you talking about, I know engineering IT guys that make 50s starting out, but top out over 6 figures in 5 years.

Yes the hours suck and why sit on your ass all day and look at a computer when you could sit on your ass and stare at someones mouth instead.

I have to agree with what some of the other people have said. Why the sudden desire to change careers? Look at some of the other forums about DDS salary and you'll quickly see that many students learned that while the money is good they couldn't continue to do something they didn't like. I know you are shadowing and that might help you to get an idea of what dentistry is all about however if I were you I would excercise caution about leaving an established career. Especially if you are doing something you seem to like (IT) but want to change just because of the income. Whatever you do I'm sure you'll do fine so good luck and there are many others who have changed careers to become dentists.

UW Class 2010, Go Huskies!

Stringing along is what I'm trying to do...Good Point.

I would love to shadow even if I don't make so much - but I don't have any exp. 🙁

HOLY S***! If all those things you mentioned are true than you must be making some kinda of world record for a single mom. Wow, all my mom does is sit on her ass and watch soap operas and complain about how much she does around the house.

IMO, i think you should stick to IT and spend more time with your kids. :luck:

One thing that comes to mind when I read your post is that you could practice healthy boundaries by telling your boss that although you appreciate his/her faith in your ability, your schedule does not permit (at this time) taking on extra activities.

Hey there, I'm an IT consultant currently doing a postbacc program fulltime now but for the first year I worked fulltime and did my courses at night. If there's anyway for you to structure your classes in the evening it may help if you can have a babysitter for you kids. If not then try to explain to your manager that you are overloaded right now and that the company's money will not be wellspent if you can't pass the CCNA. I think if you spin it in terms of what it means to him you may fare better. I also didn't tell ppl. at work what I was doing - none of there business as long as they know you have a commitment outside of work you have to keep and what you do in the office won't be affected. As for ppl asking why you want to switch careers - don't dwell on this. Your reasons for going into dentistry are your own and I'm sure they're good ones. Otherwise why would you sacrifice time with your kids, your money for tuition, and the monetary and time investment for dental school alone. This undertaking will be hard and you;ll be exhausted, but you've already been through alot of demanding real-life stuff so just keep your head up. You have alot to offer since you actually do have real life experience so make sure you market that. Rock on girl!
