Hey guys so I was recently waitlisted last week to an osteopathic medical school and I need some advice on what to do. To be honest I think I'm lucky to have even made it on the waitlist to a school. I have still yet to hear from like 16 other schools. I have come to realize that I really want to get accepted this cycle because applying again would mean pursuing a post bac, retaking my MCAT, etc. So basically I am willing to do anything and go to any osteopathic school in the U.S. if it means being accepted this cycle.

With that being said here's my question: Would it be a good idea to send a e-mail (this week or next) to my waitlisted school giving them my word that if given a seat I WILL ACCEPT AND EVEN PUT DOWN THE DEPOSIT THE SAME DAY OF BEING ACCEPTED (or at a date of their choosing)? I am willing to do this to go to medical school, but do waitlisted people send letters like this all the time, or am I actually doing something bold and putting all my chips on the table? I of course plan to also to send an update letter of new experiences I have been pursing since being waitlisted to show that I am serious about medicine.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I am mostly worried that i won't get another interview invite (my stats are 3.3 cgpa, 3.15 sgpa, 26 mcat, non urm, but pretty unique ECs, research, good recommendations) because of my subpar stats. To be honest I think I'm lucky to have even made it on the waitlist to a school. I have still yet to hear from like 16 other schools but the thing is I've been complete for those schools since early-mid September so I feel like things aren't looking so bright if I hadn't heard a peep from them yet lol. I talked to a first year med student at one of my interviews that was waitlisted and then called the school after some time and basically said they were accepted to a couple other schools but X school was my number one and would go there if pulled off the waitlist and they got accepted next day.

I think this is a rare exception but it has happened.

they really don't care if you send them what you are describing, a letter of intent, without acceptances to schools of higher reputation. an update letter for things like EC is always encouraged whether it is pre-interview or post-interview waitlist.

And how would you interpret a non-binding contract from a desperate candidate??????

You are only the one billionth person who posted the bolded in SDN.

This may actually work. It's a good sales pitch for yourself.

Also, I would just send a letter of intent come December, when mass students start to withdraw from schools. When were you complete at your schools?

Hey, I am not saying we are one in the same, but I was complete around the first week of September and complete at some schools mid-late December and I am just now starting to hear back from many of the school. I have 3 interviews and 1 acceptance that I will probably keep. People like you and I have to wait for our turn, said differently, stats do make a difference and sometimes schools base interviews more so on stats, but that doesn't mean they base their acctances on stats. The cycle is still long, I was honestly expecting to not hear much until mid-November. Keep your head up!

I appreciate the replies guys, thank you. I still want to send a letter of intent just to let them know I'm still interested, does it matter if I send it now or later at the end of the month?

OP, be different......donate one of your kidneys for an acceptance.

Yeah don't do that...no, it's not going to be seen as bold, but as desperate and clingy. Wait, ask for an update when appropriate and maintain hope.

Imagine if you tried this approach in dating... Probably wouldn't end well
