Hi, I am a nontrad who have had fair amount of hospital/hospice volunteer experience but haven't really done much shadowing. How does one go about find doctors to shadow? Also, I work a 9-5 job, so would it be difficult to find doctors for shadowing on evening or weekends?

Thanks

Hi there,
Try contacting your local medical society for the names of physicians that would be willing to spend a few hours with you on a Saturday or Sunday. Your best shots are surgeons and emergency medicine docs who can generally be found working weekends and holidays.

You don't need to spend weeks and weeks with someone to get an idea of what their practice is like. Only shadowing on a weekend could provide a different perspective that would make your experience stand out.

I once got motivated and called an attending ER physician. She had a shift from 7pm-7am(?). Key point is the hospital is open 24/7, so if you're willing to hang out at those hours, then just call, ask, and see what they say. Most academic hospitals have faculty that are more than happy to help out. Thats the quickest way to get some shadowing time assuming you don't mind being in the ER.
