Hi, I'm a Korean citizen who's applying to DO medical schools. The issue is that I have to serve army for two years and I have to join them before I turn 28. I think if I get in next year, I will have to be out of school for two years to do my duty during the medical school education. I know that some ppl take some time off and it's pretty common. After which year in school does people usually take off and why? Please help. Thank you.

This is a very specific issue. But I can tell you that my school gives us max of 6 years to finish our degree (that includes time off and remediation of any exams, courses). So if you have to take 2 years off it might not even be possible for you to graduate from an American med school.

I know that some people take one year off b/w 2nd and 3rd year, but to take 2 years off may not be possible at all.

I suggest you talk to the school specifically.

Why don't you serve the 2 years now to get it over with and then apply once your obligation is done? Because I don't know how easy it's going to be to get 2 years off...

fulfill the obligation before applying for medical school...for US applicants any military obligations are integrated into the rotations of summer and some of the elective rotations of the schools...the military is secondary in US medical schools....if your country requires the military rotations to be primary..you gotta get them out of the way before doing US medical schools..whether Allopathic or osteopathic or chiropractic or podiatric
