I get the general impression that the DO Match and residency process is a little different than Allopathic...something about a 12 month rotation or something like that...Is that similar to a 1 year IM internship followed by a 3 year Anesthesiology Residency, for example?

Just trying to understand how things work once you graduate from DO school...as I would be most interested in FP, IM, or Anesthesiology, in all likelihood.

Any help appreciated...and would especially love to hear about the match trends out of KCUMB

Thanks..I knew it was probably here somewhere...I just wasn't finding it!

I'm still not sure I understand how that all works with going through both...and why someone would do that...

So, did you go osteopathic then?

I think someone would do both just to increase their chances of placing into either a certain specialty or into a certain city. For example, if you want to do derm more than anything in the world and are a stellar applicant, you might apply to allo and osteo derm programs to be sure you get into ONE of them, but you might prefer the allo ones. Likewise, your husband and you live in Des Moines and you cannot uproot your family, so you want to match into either 1 or 2 specialties in Des Moines, so you apply to all the programs, osteo and allo combined.

Likewise, there are some people who only apply to allo and some that only apply to osteo. If you look at schools match lists you can see how many went allo versus osteo...For instance, at AZCOM nearly 70% went into allo residencies.

Yep, I noticed that....I would LOVE to see what KCUMB's match list looks like...Ideally, I would be able to go to KCUMB and do a residency in KC or Columbia...but I've got a lot of work to do before I worry too much about that.

Yes I'm doing an osteopathic transitional year. I wanted a transition year and I wanted to stay in Chicago. The competition was just too fierce in this town for me to land an allo transition year. All those radiologists and optho's have big numbers. The thought of doing an entire year of prelim medicine and surgery was not a viable option....well maybe surgery. Worked out in the end.
