So Ive been trying to withdraw from a class that Im completely bombing for the last two weeks. The deadline to withdraw without hurting your GPA is this friday. I have everything I need, I signed the form, my professor signed the form, the only thing left is for my flippin ADVISOR to sign the form.

Of course I dont have an advisor despite the fact that I declared my major after my first semester, that I went in person to see the old department chair and he promised that he'd get me one, and that I went in person to see the new department chairs secretary who said she gave me one right while I was standing there. Whatever she did didnt stick, but Im trying to see the woman she told me was my advisor.

Who doesnt answer emails when I try to schedule an appointment and never is in her office during "office hours." Im a junior with a current 4.0 GPA that Ive had since I started college that Im trying desperately to keep. I dont need any advice from the school, just someone to sign papers and give me my pin when its time to reg for classes. Not that difficult.

Anyway [end rant] if Im unable to meet the deadline, how hurtful will an F be to me? Will vet schools overlook it? I could cry for losing my GPA...🙁😡

It probably isn't the end of the world if you don't get the paper signed by the deadline. Universities do perform "retroactive withdrawals" -- make sure you can document your attempts to get all the paperwork done.

Perhaps head up to your department chair again and tell them you cannot get a hold of your advisor. Hell, the department chair or someone in that office should be able to sign the paperwork for you.

I would go to the department chair's office and very politely explain the problem to the secretary/gatekeeper, and then be very insistent. Around here "retroactive withdrawals" don't happen. Does your assigned advisor teach? If so, maybe find out when her classes are and wait for her at the scheduled classroom.

The important thing is to not let them brush you aside. Be annoying. It's ok in this case.

I'd go to the registrar's office and explain the situation. Tell them the department hasnt been any help. They should be able to make a phone call and get you squared away.

Is this a required course for vet school admission ie; will you have to repeat it? Is it a science course? If not, I wouldn't worry too much about the failing grade. If anything, it might show the adcoms that you're human and it might give you something interesting to talk about in an interview or your personal statement.

Also, losing a perfect gpa isn't the end of the world. Sometimes life sucks and you fail, but what you take away from it and what you do afterwards is what counts. Unless your failure lands you in prison...that's a different story. 🙂

Thanks guys. I pretty much staked out my advisors office after class and before work. After a lot of "Im not your advisor" talk and a lot of "lets call people about this-and end up chatting about why I missed the faculty meeting" mess I got the paper signed and turned in. And I made a copy for when the registars office says they didnt get it- which Im sure they will 😀
