Hey y’all! I was looking for some help deciding between these two schools for ranking in the TMDSAS match. I feel like both schools are quite similar in terms of location and patient population.

Both
  • P/F for pre-clinicals; Pass/fail/honors/high honors for clinicals
  • The environment and students seem friendly

Texas Tech El Paso
Pros
  • Large class size
  • Larger city than Edinburgh, more populated - more things to do
  • Required Spanish class - I’d like to continue learning the language
  • Seem very responsive to student feedback - constantly evolving the curriculum
  • Slightly more established
Cons
  • Most housing is 20 min drive from school
  • Mandatory research - but they seem flexible about helping you get it done
  • In-house questions mixed with NBME

UTRGV
Pros
  • Slightly closer to home and other major cities
  • NBME only exams
  • “UT” name - not sure if this matters in the grand scheme of things
Cons
  • smaller class size
  • No cadaver anatomy lab, they use plastinates instead
  • Students have to travel quite far for their rotations bc the school lost ties to the local hospital I believe
  • Newley acrredited? - not sure if this is something to be concerned about

Texas Tech El Paso between these two.
Despite their recent promotion to full accreditation, UTRGV does not have a teaching hospital and their MS3 and MS4 rotations are mainly at outpatient clinics without the chance to learn management of hospital inpatients
