Hi, congrats on your acceptances! I’m currently an M1 at Wayne and just wanted to chime in! While I like my school, I’m not sure if it makes the most sense in your situation over you in-state school.

While we do have a good amount of research available for students, I wouldn’t call ourselves anything close to a research powerhouse. We also do have a good amount of rotation sites available that provide really good exposure! However, I’m not sure if either one of those pros really justifies the much higher price point in comparison to Texas Tech. Without any aid, most OOS students at Wayne easily graduate with 400k+ in student loans. With concerns of PSLF and other programs potentially being on the chopping block, that amount of money is even more serious than it used to be.

Also as a fellow southerner myself, do not underestimate the pro of warm weather. Michigan gets very cold for a solid 4 months. While you do adapt it definitely can be difficult. As silly as it sounds, I have certainly struggled with productivity due to weather.

True P/F for preclinical at Texas Tech is also a nice little bonus, but “honors” here at Wayne for preclinical is not really a big deal imo.

Overall, I would say that Texas Tech is hands down the better pick unless Wayne offers you a very healthy FA package. Again, congrats on your acceptances!!

one thing to research a bit is where you might go for your MS3 and MS4 years at Texas Tech El Paso.

Their website seems to be still in the process of getting back to normal so I can't find the answers I looked for, but I think some students are assigned to other locations such as Amarillo for their 3rd year rotations and this would mean moving to somewhere else for a year or more. This might affect your decision a little.

Another thing you might want to consider is if you are interested in specialties dealing with women's health, the current political climate might change your curricula depending on the state you train in. Just did our Repro unit here in Michigan and friends in Texas MD school have reported their Repro sequence was heavily censored and certain words were never mentioned.

Also on a separate note, I do think Wayne will give you better opportunities and access for competitive specialties.

I asked some current students, they said that all students rotate in El Paso

You're right, I confirmed this by asking an El Paso dean.
I don't know what particular specialty you are interested in but a Texas Tech El Paso student matched to ophthalmology this year at Dell.

El Paso is a great medical school with a very good match list. Although the location may not be as ideal as you are hoping, the value of a medical education from there is great. Depending on your goals, mandatory lectures can take a toll on your mental health as they take up time (consider the commute to school, not being able to work on research or have flexibility with your time). 3x the tuition for Wayne State is a lot. That's more than 200k extra that you are paying over the four years. Go to El Paso and save money! Work really hard and be a superstar there so you can match wherever you'd like for residency. Best of luck!!
