TUCOM-CA or ATSU-KCOM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well I happen to love being in the Bay Area, and would never want to live elsewhere in the US, other parts of California are okay to me but its the West Coast or I would frankly just leave this country. I would not be caught dead in Kirksville.

Amen.

I have the exact same attitude. I wouldn't have gone to school in Kirksville if you paid me. (Seriously.)

Hence, Touro. There is absolutely nothing like the Bay Area, anywhere.

I still don't know if location for year 1/2 is worth sacrificing a better name (KCOM) and obviously very solid years 3/4. Didn't you have to leave the bay anyway and do rotations in NY???

Plus, it is a known fact: So Cal > Nor Cal

Locations is really not going into play when it comes to my decision. I am 90% sure I am going to be turning down Fort Lauderdale for Kville. Two years is a short amount of time. It is the mecca people, The Mecca 😛

This is undeniable! I am definitely a west coast boy, but came from the rainy Pacific Northwest. I am going to end up in California someday, but it is cool that my medical education will take me across the US (if I match to Philly for residency). I definitely miss the west coast, but it is totally worth it.

Had to leave Bay Area for rotations. And couldn't get residency in SF.

Had I gone to an allopathic school, I'd probably by in a residency in SF right now.

But you know, everyone's different. I had to do what I had to do at that time: family, relationships, housing, money. These all play into one's decision.

The key is to make an informed decision, i.e. know what you're getting yourself into.

Hmm, I know you have your reasons for this ... but that's a pretty big assumption to just make.

It's actually not. Once you've been through the match, you'll understand.

Let me guess you are talking about Stanford or UCSF? Those are the schools closest to Touro, in fact they are the only MD schools in the Bay Area. UC Davis also has a lot of students rotating in SF.

No, I was talking about one of the residencies at UC Davis. I was told that they won't consider a Touro-CA grad yet they currently have grads from other DO schools. I'm not saying this is true for UCDMC as a whole, just this one specialty.

There are quite a few Touro grads at UC Davis, as well as UCSF and even Stanford. Mind mentioning which particular program?

Its the future headquarters of StarFleet.

I specifically stated that my example was for ONE specific residency program/specialty. Just that ONE. I'm sure there are Touro Grads at UCD in other areas.

Are you naming the residency or not?

It's not really relevant. My point with the example is that the problems with Touro's clinical rotations are something to be concerned about and that there are people who question the clinical education provided. Is this fair, no, but that stigma is out there and people should realize it.

Fair enough, as much as it looked like it I was not trying to call you out, I was just curious. Sorry about that.

Id like to address much of what has been discussed about TOURO CA on this thread:

- Touro CA is a great school -- every school has people who are bitter, unhappy, or otherwise. in addition, every school has stronger and weaker qualities. that said, TUCOM-CA has an amazing curriculum and is geared towards making you a knowledgeable and skillful doctor who will excel in rotations and residency as well as on the boards (as can be seen by the residency match...see below for the link)

- Touro CA isnt 'shipping' people anywhere -- they provide a multitude of available locations for rotations: most are in the bay area, others throughout CA, MI, CO, and NY. Additionally, students can opt to setup elective rotations outside of the Touro CA rotations during 4th yr, so for the real go-getters, there is always that option if you are for some reason unsatisfied with the opportunities Touro provides, or if you want to rotate in something / somewhere specific.

- Touro CA students have been matched in fantastic residencies: http://www.tu.edu/user_files/478/2006-2009_Matches.pdf

- Any school is only what you make of it -- go to the school you think is the best fit for you and make the most of your education. At this point, its all in your hands...

good luck to everyone applying, interviewing, and deciding. if you have any questions about TUCOM feel free to PM me. thanks!

So you are saying they do not ship people away from the bay area during the core rotations? Everyone who wants to stay in the area is allowed to? Why do they have a lottery then?

I do not mean to be confrontational, I'm curious. Thanks.

By the way, I have no doubt that this school has many hard-working committed students who can obtain competitive residencies and be great doctors.

No need to apologize, I didn't take any offense👍.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but misinformation is not ok.

What I highlighted in bold above is flat out not true.

The overwhleming majority of Touro's rotation are NOT in the Bay Area. Most students must leave.

There isn't "some reason" 4th year are unsatisfied with the "rotations that Touro provides." Rather, Touro does not provide ANY forth year rotations. Students are expected to find and apply for 100% of their 4th year rotations. And the school does not, will not compensate your sites 1 dime.

These are the facts.

How much is tuition without compensation in the 4th year??? Do you know if NV compensates for their spots??

Tuition is same as other years, basically you're are paying for nothing.

Keep in mind, this is FORTH year we're talking about. Touro does in fact pay preceptors for 3rd year rotations.

Contact FutureInternist, he/she should be able to tell you.

I PMed him and was talking with him a little bit. I also obtained the email address of a 3rd year and sent him an email about rotations. I know you were curious too Punk and we talked a little bit about it, but I'll share everything I learn with you when I get all the info!! 👍

Cool Beans.

I'll also post this accreditation review here. For the sake of information.

This was written by Dean Troll and Dean Kris for Touro's recent WASC review.

Seems like the majority of poor comment there were still made about CA??? Seemed like NV had almost 80% say they would go again and 70% say they liked the way the school used it's resources or something.

Agreed. Touro-NV students and staff seem happier. And the campus appears better run.

However, the issue is complex in that Touro-NV is technically a "branch campus" of Touro-CA. The "provost" from Touro-CA is really provost for both campuses. They share senior leadership.

Touro-CA is of course a branch of "Touro College" the parent organization, the strained relationship between Touro-CA and Touro College is much discussed in that report.

I mean, I suppose it is a branch campus and yes, they do have the same 'western provost' etc, but it seems like they are completely independently run, separate campuses. I dunno ...
