TUCOM-CA students accepted for fall 05

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will be following Randy Moss from Minnesota to the bay area in August. I will also be dominating defensive backs and scoring many touchdowns. And by "defensive backs," I mean "classes." And by "touchdowns," I mean exactly that.

Hi Everyone...I just got my acceptance email this morning also....this process is consuming me...I"m so stressed out! Which school? Here's my thing: trying to decide between DMU, KCUMB, and TUCOM and whether or not to go to an interview at NYCOM?????

My priorities:
1. Get a good education
2. Get residency in CA

Any advice??

Thanks

Go to TUCOM. You will get a good education. You will get a residency in CA.

hello again...

Well...I was wondering if any of you have check out housing yet. I know it's early, but I live in SoCal (OC baby) and I'll have to do my apartment hunt online and during a quick weekend trip up north (i joke, i have no OC pride). Soooo, if you've heard anything or know anything i should know...share?

I posted a thread in the Osteopathic Med Students Forums (that's right, that's what we are...we're med students  it still blows my mind) about the housing bidnass...so post to your heart's content!

Thank you much guys!

Hey Antt,

There are a few housing resources on the MISL (Mare Island student life) website!
http://misl.info/cv/c.asp?c=54

It seems like there are a lot of options, and a lot of opinions on where to live in Mare Island. If you're feeling like Ricky Rich, Lennar is building a whole bunch of gorgeous new homes right on Mare Island itself. (I started a thread about those earlier... 'The future of Mare Island'.) There are also the dorms (which, in all honesty, I wasn't very impressed).

Mr. Davis sets up a yahoo group for the incoming class in may or june and a lot of conversation goes on about housing. I was on craigslist and saw a bunch of awesome 3-bedroom properties that would go for about 500-600 a person. So if I can find 2 people that I think I'll be compatible with I may do just that.

...haha, but i'm soooooo over roommates. so i'd like my own place. i've looked at craigslist too though, it's fricken gnarly. i wouldn't mind living in the same complex as others though.

i gotta go to class now, but i'm gonna chiggity check out that link...let me know if you all have found cool apartment complexes to live in.

thanks a bundle!!!!

Did everyone else get a letter telling them about the transcripts and the physical exam forms? I was wondering if these things were going to come in the mail (immunization and phys. exam forms) or if we could download them somewhere.

Is it possible to find a place in may or april and have them hold it for you until you start school? I'm so clueless, I've always done my housing last minute. 🙂

If any of you come out to Tahoe, I work at the Harveys Poker Room!
hehe

Later all!
Congrats!

I think those forms are going to come in the mail, but I also found them on the TUCOM website.

D'oh!
I think my web skills are severely deficient. Thanks!

I just got my acceptance and I am really excited. 😀 I will probably be seeing you all in the fall. I haven't signed the letter yet because I have a few questions/worries. Maybe some of you can help me out. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about TUCOM and did not get the best feeling about the campus, but I did like the people I met at the interview and on campus. The curriculum seems good, but I'm worried about eventually getting a residency outisde of California (near Chicago). I've also heard mixed reviews about the rotations. (My other doubts are about the campus facilities and the general area/living, but they aren't as important) Sorry to ramble! Please help, I have to decide by Monday. (Let me add that I have yet to be accepted anywhere else.)

There's some info towards the end of this thread about rotations and facilities and whatnot. It's the one I've found most helpful. Hope it helps ya!

Neither the campus nor Vallejo are all that nice. On the other hand, it is close to a lot of places that are very nice -- San Fran, Napa, etc. I think this could be a good thing. There will be a motivation to stay in and study during the week, and a lot of non-crappy places to go on the weekends and various Jewish holidays.

Nice job, congrats.

Does anyone know about the male female ratio? My interview had far more females and the guy at the quality inn told me he'd seen a 10:1 f:m ratio in the applicants he'd brought to the school? Does this make it easier for men?

When I interviewed in October, I was the ONLY female. Who knows??? In general, DO schools are male dominated. I have no idea why...

the demographics from last year's class had the highest percentage of females ever for touro--58% according to the website. i think the trend in schools now definitely favors females. at my interview, i was one of 3 males, out of 9 total. women scare me 😱

😉

😉

There were 2 guys in my interview group, out of 10.
Doesn't bode well for me.

The M/F ratio at Touro is something I'm very interested in. When I called the infamous Quality Inn to reserve a room for my interview (this was back in Nov), the guy responded "Are you making this reservation for you?" I said "Yes." He said, "oh . . . I thought it was a woman college, you're the FIRST guy to get a room here for Touro."

At my interview, their were 9 woman and 2 men, including myself. So I asked the QI shuttle bus driver, "What would you say the ratio of women to men that you drive here is?" Without missing a beat he says, "10 women for every man."

I was shocked. I think this in some weird phenomenon happening at Touro, where when more women then men are applying. I think a very high percepntage of the people they've accepted thus far are women and . . . at this late date, they are trying to make up for it by interviewing almost ALL men. Otherwise, the imbalence would be even more pronounced than last year.

Being a guy, I of course feel lucky. Its odd. Touro has the highest F/M ratio of ANY medical school. And I think it has to do with applicants, not some school policy. Does this stike anyone as odd?

When I interviewed in late February there were 3 girls and 6 or 7 guys. I'm sure it will all even out in the end.

The F:M ratio is that favorable? Makes me wish I weren't going to the same school as my girlfriend. Lol, just kidding honey if you're reading this!!!

Yup, she called back and I paid. Out the @$$.

More girls than guys huh? That's what I'm talking about.

Then why is everyone who posts in this thread a dude?

for those who interviewed at tucom and comp, is it worth my time?

Chris, I interviewed at both and the short answer is no. We can chat on IM in greater detail.

You gonna IM about it? What? But that spoils all the fun! I want to hear the dish.

Just curious DJ, if COMP is so interested in you numbers, why are they calling you now? When were you complete there?

plus, all the cool people are here in the bay area, right? 😉

You know it baby!

Thanks to those who helped answer my questions about Touro. All of my doubts are gone, and I will officially be there in August! (and don't worry boys, the girls are around, we're not plotting... yet 😀 )

hey bryan, you really should change your avatar. i was checking out scott's friendster and saw the same sad picture in full size. it's depressing, man. 🙁

Alright TUTiff! Congrats!

I have 15 minutes before an exam so and I don't feel like cramming anymore so quickly I'll share my feelings about Western/TUCOM:
-The 60% of the class filled is misleading since accepted students get up to 2 months to pay their deposit, and the dean said 60% of the class was paid and seated. That to me means there are many outstanding acceptances.
-The interview made me feel really uncomfortable. All my other ones were more conversation-like and I had the opportunity to let my personality show. At Western it was almost an interrogation and I tried to make a joke and got stone-faced glares. I didn't try it again.
-The library closes at 5 (or 6?) every day. Almost all students I talked to said they've never been.
-Location is a wash. Both in CA, giving you rotations and likely residency in CA. Both campuses leave something to be desired.
-Personally, I can't stand driving in, around, or anywhere near LA.
-I checked princetonreview.com and western's numbers were better last year to my surprise. However, TUCOM acceptance rate -4%, Western - 21%
-I'm not saying TUCOM is soo much better, I'm just telling deejay it's not worth going to when he's $2-3000 invested in TUCOM already and obviously looking forward to staying in the Bay Area.

hey DJ, I had the same type of situation happen to me. The day after I sent in my $2000 deposit for TUCOM-MI, I received an interview invite from LECOM-Erie. At first, I was like "oh no what should I do?". But then I was happy with my decision to go to TUCOM-MI so I promptly cancelled it and withdrew my application the following morning. Feels good when you know that you've already been accepted and you can turn down other schools 😉 .

I emailed Dr. Sarah Towne yesterday. She's the current/new director of clinical education at TUCOM (not that you'd know it from the website 😛... Dr. Haight suggested her contact info). And she was great in getting back to me directly on a few issues that might interest many of you. I know better than to post private emails (even if not all that private) in public, so I'll just summarize. Those with more questions should contact her directly.

- TUCOM is working on establishing a new AOA residency in FAIRFIELD, hoping to be complete by 2006.
- Working on dual-accreditation AOA/AMA residencies at "a couple of sites", but these sound like they're further down the pipeline. (She expects "some" will work out.)
- One of the family practice faculty at UCSF-Fresno is from COMP (~gag~), but she's trying to link TUCOM to their programs (trying to compensate, obviously).
- "A lot of things in the works."
- I asked if TUCOM-LV might add pressure to TUCOM rotation sites; she said that there isn't as much pressure as I might think. There are core rotation spots, including a few in the Bay Area, that aren't being filled at the present.

All encouraging news, and hope the trends continue!

Okok, I better come clean. I'm not even a TUCOM-student, and will never be. 🙂 I'm actually pjpajamas boyfriend, and who has far more time than she does for lurking on SDN. She figures out the details, and I post it for her.

We're moving down to Fairfield, and I'll definitely be meeting many of y'all (classmates-in-law?) in the near future. BBQ and drinks at our new home in August, k? Keep your schedules clear.

And aphasia, we're *definitely* comin' up and playing poker at Harveys' this spring. We played at Horizons a couple times this winter... but you take care of us with a few pocket aces now and then, and we'll happily switch. 🙂

haha heech, got a kick out of reading your 'confession'. where do you guys plan to live?

well, i didn't have to think too hard about western. called them up and withdrew my app.

how is it that western's acceptance rate is so high?

Thanks for the rotation info heech. You know, I thought I sent you a PM and got one back from pjpajamas and I wondered if she just had 2 names.
Poker? I barely know her. lol jk. I'm so there as well.

Yea... sometimes I find myself struggling with this whole "Identity" issue too. But even if I really am just the figment of someone's imagination... I'm just glad I'm the figment that didn't have to take the MCATs.

djshakur: I'll still be working in Davis, which is why we settled on Fairfield as a compromise location. (That way we both have to commute and arrive home exhausted. Just kidding; 20 minutes door to Touro door, for anyone else considering Fairfield.)

I've been working for quite a while, after college at Berkeley and grad school out in Boston. So, for me at least... its definitely time to grow past the apartment stage... so I just bought my very first house in one of the new developments out there.
http://kbhome.com/Community.aspx?CommID=00650401

Real estate out here is ridiculous. Prices in Vallejo and Fairfield have appreciated about 25% in the past year. Townhomes that were selling for $350k early 2004 are now over $500k! But I choose to think positively... 25% more this year, right?

yay!

I'm so jealous that you're going to buy a house out there. The neighborhood looks wonderful!
Congrats~
Anyone here live near San Diego? I'm going to be there for a couple days next week. 17-19th before I leave for the Party Poker Million IV cruise.

Let me know!

yeah, and a running debt before med school even starts!

Congrats to heech and pjpajamas on your new house. It looks awesome. I'm excited to meet all of you in the fall. Wish I lived closer so I could go to the Bay Area before August 🙁 Maybe its a good thing though, because I really need to practice my poker skills ( or should I say get some poker skills).

Hey all, I just got back from vacation and was catching up on sdn (no life, j/k), but I'm from SD too! Glad to see all you future Touro peep's. 🙂

You guys have to stop me if I try to rotate at a TUCOM-LV site. I'll blow all of my loans.

Any East Coasters here????

Hey fellow tucom people, I will be attending tucom-ca this coming fall and was thinking of living on campus--was wondering if on-campus housing is a guarantee or is it first come first serve?

Thanks
