Someone may have posted this already--but Dr. Haight's letter mentioned that a listserv would start near the end of April. Has anyone received an e-mail about it yet? I have yahoo, and I get tons of spam. I check my spam box for Touro messages, but I just want to make sure I didn't accidentally erase something. Thanks!
Nope, haven't heard anything. I am hoping we hear something by the end of this week. I have yahoo too and have been checking my spam as well

I also thought that as well.

i'm not considering it, but seeing that the average rents (and cost of living) in SF are higher than the average rents in the vallejo area, it doesn't seem financially wise. tack on the roundtrip ferry fare (something in the range of $15, not sure of the exact price) and the option seems even more unappealing. unless, of course, you have a compelling reason to stay in the city.

don't get me wrong; i currently work there (despite a 2 hour+ commute from fremont) and love the city enough to want to settle there some day, but it just doesn't make financial sense at this point in my life. as of now, i'll be happy driving there once a week or every other for some good food and chinese groceries (although richmond/oakland is also a good alternative for that).
Thanks for the input. Yeah I know the costs are looking prohibitive, but Im moving with my fiance and she is looking for work as a clinical social worker and most of the networking/job searching points to SF. I currently live in the Boston area but we did get a chance to come out a couple weeks ago to go apartment hunting. We looked at a bunch of places in vallejo. Most were shady, but we liked Sundance the most. I just wished I had more time to scope out the surrounding towns.

If your fiance is going to work in SF, you might consider somewhere in between...San Rafael or Marin. They're just across the bay. I'm not sure how expensive rent is there. If you'll only have one car, Berkeley can also be an option. It'll be a little bit of a drive for you (30 min without traffic), but she can take the BART (public transportaion--kind of like subway) over to the city. They also have commuter buses that go from Berkeley and Emeryville across the bay bridge over to SF during commute hours. Good luck!

Hey Guys, Long time no post,

I was screwing around with the new satelite view feature of google maps and came across this image of our new Alma Mater. At least, I think that's what it is.

I tried to label the buildings based on my recollection of my visit for my interview. I could be way off here, so sorry if you notice errors.

As you can see, TUCOM is bordered on one side by a lovely golf course and on the other by a not so lovely old shipyard. So what you think of TUCOM really does depend on your point of view. 🙂 Sorry bad.

Unfortnetly, SDN only lets me attach this as a tiny JPG or a zip file, which (for any mods listening) is SUPER ANNOYING, why can't i just insert a resonably sized image directly into my text?

Anyway, open the attached zip file to view the image.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to check out those two towns on rent.com. Fortunately I do have family out there to scope out a place that may look good.

I DO NOT want to step on heech's turf  he is the master of the commute! I drove up and down that area and I have to tell you I dig the Rio Vista area (I think a boat could be in my future) but practically, the Fairfield area is the most cost effective along with the surrounding areas. I was a little worried about living in Vallejo proper. I am an RN and will be working at the hospital in Fairfield (all I have to do is convince them to give me a job 😀 ) so I would think your fiancé could find work in the local hospitals. The city is great but the traffic sucks (I lived in San Mateo during the boom years - not the gold rush but the IT boom 99 :meanie: ) So anyway, keep looking and check out the local hospital websites for jobs.

good luck

Hey OldMan, you better watch yourself!

More seriously though, I agree with you about Fairfield. Although property prices are flying through the roof (uh, 10-15% already this year?), considering the types of homes/neighborhood.. its still more affordable than other similar areas in the nearby area. (San Rafael and Marin? No way, Marin actually makes San Francisco county look affordable.)

And I think your odds of getting a job in Fairfield are *great*. Did you read that article (oh wait, I think I posted it here) about the huge amounts of expansion going into the Solano county hospitals? What a perfect setup for you.

By the way, pjpajamas is already talking carpooling 🙂. Same offer goes for anyone else that ends up in Fairfield!

Hey all! Just a quick note to introduce myself -- I've been following the thread for a while, but haven't had a moment to really jump in. I'll be joining you all this August at TUCOM! I'm coming out from Connecticut -- actually, I'll be making a few trips in the coming weeks to find a place to live. Not too sure about the campus housing - I didn't get to see it when I interviewed last month (tour guide didn't take us). Since I too own my own home, I think I'll find it rough doing the campus living. Plus, my significant other will be joining me this fall as well. But I may go and check it out when I head west in a few weeks, just in case.

(OldMan - I'm right up there with ya in respect to the age: I hit the ripe ol' age of 38 last December. 😱 )

Also, has anyone gotten any financial aid package lately? I got my acceptance letter 2 weeks ago, sent in my deposit a week ago, and haven't heard anything. My FAFSA has been sent in, and I am eager to find out what the school awards me so I can figure out what I'll need from a private lender.

Ugh.

I have also submitted my financial aid package and left email, voice mail and sent a messenger pigeon with no reply on all fronts. I need to start planning for those tight days ahead. I have just sold my house in AZ and need to put the numbers together for next year. Has anybody else experienced this void from financial aid???

Now not the only old man in 2009 😀

Anyone know of a good alternative loan? I was looking at Medloans.
Y'know, I like Touro but so far the email list hasn't been started, and we have no idea where we stand on financial aid...are they waiting till after May 15 maybe?

I am also starting to wonder about fin aid as well. I am not hurting for $ right now, but I would like to get it squared away soon. That and living arrangments.

pjpajamas was just at Touro on Friday for a different event, and she dropped by the financial aid office since she was having the same problem getting a phone response. Apparently, the financial aid folks told her the letters "should be coming out by Monday". There was something about IT folks, normally involved in getting everyone's information into the system, were busy with setting up the new pharmacy school's systems.

So, this week!

You guys are just a wealth of information 🙂

Hello all,
I'll be attending TUCOM-CA beginning in August and wanted to see if anybody else is out here in the Vallejo/East Bay yet! I moved into my house here in Vallejo just over three weeks ago and I am loving the area so far! Every time I pass Mare Island I get more and more excited about starting school in August, and I'm also very excited to start meeting people so orientation week and those first few weeks won't be so strange to us all. Plus, I'm new to California and aside from my realtor I really don't know anybody out here!
I've already heard from the financial aid office, they got my FAFSA and fired back an aid package to me already. I selected Chela for federal loans and Northstar for private...so far the process has been easy, though I haven't heard much from the school or the lenders since sending in all of the paperwork.
Best of luck to everybody who's planning a move or transition, and I look forward to meeting you all in August! Again, I'd love to start getting together with people so there are some familiar faces to look forward to...drop me a line ([email protected]), I'm in Vallejo!
Later,
-Aaron

Does anyone know which Touro we are sapposed to put on our FAFSA? When I interviewed last month the fin aid gal said to put down Touro-NY because there was no Touro-CA, but there are now both. Should I just submit it with both? Thanks.

I just wanted to remind everyone to send in their $1000 deposit. It has to get there by May 15th.

The letter I got today in the mail said June 15th.

I got an email saying May 15. Maybe if you had an interview earlier, the due date is earlier and so on and so forth.

Is anyone looking for a roommate? Or know of any safe+ cheap available housing? Where is everyone from the class of 2009 living at for this coming school year? Since there is a big possiblity that I may not be living on-campus, I would really like to live with or near my fellow classmates for moral support and carpool purposes, lol. Please help me! 😳

True. I was accepted on 4/22 and paid the $2000 deposit. The letter I got today said that the $1000 tuition deposit was due by 6/15.

Man, really hope TUCOM gets that list-serv up so that all you out-of-towners can start working out your housing solutions! Just as a reminder, craigslist and also the MISL website are your friends for this purpose. There've also been several apartments explicitly mentioned in this thread, so I'm sure there'll be other students living there!

G'luck!

Hi everyone. Besides the deposit that is due soon, make sure to get your health/immunization reports signed by your primary doc. The forms can be located at: www.tumi.edu ---->Forms----->Certificate of Immunity (PDF) and HealthHistory/PhysicalExamForm (PDF). There are a lot of things that we need to be immunized for (or show proof for that matter)...so don't procrastinate.

Has anyone checked actually visted housing around the area? I am seriously looking at Bay Village Apartments.

Cheers

Yeah, later acceptances have the $1000 2nd deposit due on June 15th. Earlier acceptances have it due May 15th. Forgot to mention that before.

I simply can not do the dorm thing but would like to share an apartment or a house with another student/students. I did find a nice lady who is renting out rooms in her 4 bedroom home for about $400/mo. She wants touro students! its very clean and about 2 miles from the island. Anyone interested let me know and i'll get you her contact info.

I'll be there in August too. I was considering Bay Village, but i heard from a tenant that thier apartment was broken into and cars get stolen fairly frequently. I have heard that car break-ins are normal in Vallejo, but the neighborhood around Bay Village is not very nice. I'm going to be at Sundance, which seems a bit better.

hooray for the listserv!! When do we get a yahoo group? My e-mail box is already becoming inundated. Good thing I have 2 gigs on gmail!

I was just looking at the health forms we've got to send in...the Cert. of Immunity is straightforward, but both pages of the HealthHistory/PE Form say 'To Be Completed By Student' though the PE form requires a health care provider signature at the bottom...I wonder if I should call out the school on this error or just 'follow instructions' and save myself a trip to the doctor (and a few $'s) 😀

Hey! I'm heading to Touro in a few months and I'm planning to live somewhere in between Mare Island and Davis (bf works in Davis). Anybody else in the same situation? We're currently looking at apts and houses around Vallejo, Cordelia Junction, FairField etc. If anybody is interested and also in the same boat as me, we can group up and rent a house together. My bf plans on training up to work each day. But us med students can carpool to Mare Island together. I'm hoping it will work better if I find other couples because then you'll want to go home after class each day. Let me know if you'd like to consider this and we can start planning!

Hi, my fiance works in Folsom, so he'll be taking the train often too. We were looking at the American Canyon area for places to live.

Hey if you guys are looking to buy a house, there's a house across the street from ours that's still available. It's part of the Siena complex, off of Green Valley Road in Fairfield. Unit #51, a plan three, I believe at $625k. Should be built by July.

In case your sick of the several dozen emails / hour . . . you can easily change to 'digest' format by going to the settings page of the listserv. You get less emails with several individuals' messages lumped together.

Listserv Settings

PS- You still get ALL messages.

Thanks Bryan. You just saved my sanity for the time being

I just interviewed at Touro and it has a beautiful campus. I am so jealous of those who already got accepted 😉 I have to say the weather was great when I went and I was very pleased with the library and the anatomy classroom. The library was fully stocked and had wireless internet. All the students were very kind as well a very helpfull in their last exam week. Good luck everyone who has been accepted and I will keep you posted on my end.

Is there anyone else who did not recieve email regarding the listserv...I was accepted a few months back and was wondering if we're all supposed to get it at the same time... thanks

Did you get the email saying that if you change to digest format, you will have your settings changed back, at least till classes start?

I didn't receive my listerv email either. 🙁 Maybe it has something to do with paying our deposits... how long ago did you pay you 2nd deposit Falcondorf? I just payed mine recently. Does anyone know why some of us have yet to get our email?

i also did not receive an email about the list-serve. i figured it might have been because my deposit was not due until may 6, so i called admissions. she told me that this was indeed the reason, and that i should be receiving notice shortly, after my decision to accept admission was posted with them. i called on thursday, i believe, but have not heard....

Hey guys,

I actually just paid my 2nd deposit last week (probably arrived thurs/fri), but I got put on the listserv. Maybe it depends on when you got accepted? That's strange. All you guys have missed so far is a million people introducing themselves, people seeking roommates, how to use the listserv, and people saying they haven't received their financial aid package.

For those of you who aren't on the listserv and need roommate info, here's the link to the roommate list being compiled:
http://touro2009.cjb.net

Hope this helps! 🙂

Yeah thanks to Alex for creating that list. That's motivation for ya. We need to do more things like that so we can get to know each other better. Someone mentioned creating a facebook, perhaps a Touro page on Friendster? A yahoo group? We should throw around some ideas on SDN, since anything beats a string of campuswide e-mails.

So how do we add our info to the roomate list???

Here's my blurb to anyone who wants to read it. If anyone knows how . . . can you add this to the roomate list? Or just contact me directly of you are interested.

My name’s Bryan. I’m 28. I grew up in Georgia, went to Columbia University in New York City. I lived on an organic farm in California for several years in my early twenties. Alaska, Wisconsin and Guatemala were also in there somewhere along the way.

I listen to a lot of music, spend more time than I should on my computer. Some things I’m into are books, hiking (Sierras especially), plants, the weather and Zen Buddhism. But really my free time is spent with friends, hanging out at someone's house or some drinks at a bar. I’m somewhat of a news and politics junkie. A perfect Sunday morning involves waking up at 11, drinking coffee and reading the NYTimes. I’m definitely on the very left side of the spectrum, but not militant. I smoke, though not in the house. My room is usually a mess, but I keep it contained and I know how to clean a bathroom and do my dishes.

I’m looking to live with 3 or 4 relaxed, open-minded people. I could live anywhere, but being a little closer to Berkeley and SF seems highly preferable to the sanitized suburbs. El Cerrito, Albany, North Berkley all seem like good options with lots of available stuff for the little bit I’ve looked. We’d still be only 20-25min from school. I'm flexible on this issue, especially if I find some great people and a great place in Vallejo.

If any of this sound like what you’re looking for, let’s talk. I’m close to the bay area all summer, so I’ve already started looking. [email protected]
.
