TUCOM-CA vs. DMU

Hey guys I'd appreciate some insight on whether I should go to Touro CA or DMU. I just got off the waitlist at DMU and I need to reply by tomorrow at 5pm so quick responses would be super. Thanks!

i am biased so naturally i would say DMU for sure, but unless you have some really good reason to attend DMU overTouro, I would assume you have an apartment arranged, your paperwork completed, and everything else. Doing that in Des Moines would be a gigantic pain at this point. Class starts in less than a month. So unless you really have a good reason to deal with that stress this next month, I would just attend Touro.

That being said, DMU is usually in the top DO schools. FWIW.

I have to agree with FrkyBgStok. Doing all the paper work would be a pain, but you probably already have most of the medical documentation ready. Redoing financial aid might be a headache

In regards to the apartment, there are probably some nice ones left close to campus. I recently (about 2.5 weeks ago) went to Des Moines from out of state to look for a place and found several. If you are interested in some names you can PM me. I know that many apts will allow you to do the lease over the phone and if you tell them you're going to be a student at DMU they do not require any sort of background checks.

Thank you both for your quick responses.

I actually haven't found an apartment in CA yet b/c I've been holding out for DMU to get back to me, and the paperwork I don't mind doing twice if DMU has more to offer. Had DMU offered me a spot 2 weeks ago I would've taken it without a second thought...but in the last few days I've grown to like tucom-ca, though thinking about it, it's mainly because of location and the people that I've met through the email list.

I think what I mainly need to know is which school will offer a better overall experience, mainly during the clinical rotations. I've read that some TUCOM-CA students have a rough time with their rotations, but at the same time I've read that DMU students also have varying experiences during theirs.

so if the paperwork and any other inconveniences were taken out of the picture, you guys would both suggest DMU?

there are good people at every school that you haven't met.
dmu has been around a long time, great reputation & placement record, successful/prominent alumni all over.
the bay area is hard to beat, but i'd choose dmu.

i would choose DMU hands down. not only because I am from des moines. the school was the second osteo school and the alumni network is enormous. Also DMU has affiliated rotation spots in many hospitals that have osteo programs. DMU is consistently one of the best DO schools in the nation. If you want to live in Cali for any reason, Des Moines can't even hold a candle to it, but if you are simply looking at the school, DMU would be the best bet.

I would say go DMU. From all I have heard DMU has the better national reputation than TOURO.

I had a hard time deciding between which school I would go to as well and what made me select DMU was their constant goal of improving the school in every way: technology, campus layout/ buildings, instructors, variety of courses, research, etc.

One of our Anatomy professors used to teach at DMU. If you are interested, you could seek his counsel.

Other than that, here is my 2c: If you like OMM, hate snow, urban/suburban environment, and SF Bay Area attractions... then I would consider TUCOM.

Another tidbit I would add is the 2015 class sizes:

As a Bay Area resident of the past 13 years I feel inclined to say this: do not go to Touro simply because of its proximity to the Bay Area. It may look close on the map (because, well, it is) but when you're on that island, it doesn't feel like that. Touro is actually relatively isolated.

Now, I'm not saying don't go to Touro. I'm a premed who knows next to nothing about its curriculum, I just don't want you to factor the Bay Area location too heavily into your considerations.

To put this issue at rest, I decided to go with DMU though the decision didn't come easily; it was honestly one of the tougher decisions I've had to make.
