TUCOM - NV Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Please let me know if I can offer any advice. I've gone through the entire process there at Touro, and can give you the scoop on the day, the interview, my perception of the students and the faculty, and the surrounding area the school is in. Realize the school is in Henderson, which is from my guess about 10-15 mins from the strip. A very nice area, suburban. Good luck to everyone on their interviews! It is a real laid back process and just as much an opportunity for you to make sure the school is a good fit.

^^Thanks! Im definitley into the suburban thing.. I have this intense hate of gambling (long story, lol) and I didn't really want to even visit Las Vegas area for this school.. but after talking to Roger I got a bit excited about my interview! I will take any advice you have to give, and Id definitley like to know more about the area (although what, Im not exactly sure) because Ive never been out that way before and its a looong way from home (at least in my opinion)! Turns out Roger attended school in Chicago..i thought that was pretty neat that he even knew where I came from!

their complete lack of technology is really a sore spot for me. Especially since it's a new school. The school doesn't video/sound record the lectures and the actual computer lab is pretty sad.

that being said, i just got an acceptance! WOO HOO!

Here's a picture of the computer lab. Word is that they will be adding another computer next year...

Wow! Congrats to you and superfan!!!!

Were you guys late bloomers? When did you send in your secondaries and get interviews? I'm wondering how quickly they are at the admissions process since I'm working on my secondary right now. Anyway, I sooooo wish I were you right now! Congrats again!

webcozmo and ThisIsYourLife -- I sent PMs to you guys -- so could ya' look! HELP!🙄

I was sent an interview invite on a Friday and I submitted my app that Monday before. My interview was Tuesday the 4th and I just got accepted via email today. One thing amazing about touro is that they are VERY QUICK

thanks a lot. I had my interview on Dec. 4th. I was late because I didn't send my MCAT in until october 19th. I think only about half of the seats are filled.

Oh snap! Wow the are fast. That's awesome!

When I talked to Roger yesterday 12.06 he said 55 of 134 spots were filled.

got the good news from roger today. I interviewed on tues and knew by friday. gotta love the turnaround. my wife and i loved vegas and with touro's monopoly on the hospitals and elective flexibility, i don't care if they hold class in a laundrymat. we're heading to sin city. told my wife she has two+ years to win enough hands at blackjack to pay for med school...

Congrats to all of you getting in...welcome aboard.

so i guess i interviewed with both of you as well! congrats to you guys or if you're one of the 2 gals. I'm interviewing on tues at Touro Mare Island, but will probably place the deposit for Henderson.

We're totally stoked to move down. I just interviewed at AZCOM on Thurs and it was cool and I think it's a great school, but just didn't have the feel. I dunno, but being married totally shifts priorities and AZCOM had a very "single" feeling to it. But if I were single I'd prolly head that direction. And I'm not a big fan of tests every monday. I'm sure its effective b/c they have awesome board rates, but i'll take block exams and ruin a week instead of studying every weekend for a monday exam. just my take tho. to each his or her own i guess.

so who's got suggestions on laptops? i'm open to any ideas.

There is a laptop thread that was started a while back. I will try to find it and bump it for you so you can get a good read from it. Hopefully it helps.

It's funny you say that because the openness to families is one of the reasons my husband and I really like AZCOM. He interviewed there on Tuesday and most of the students he talked to were married and some had kids.

For those of you who have already filled out the secondary or are currently doing so, have you found it annoying to type your responses on the lines they have? The supplemental application that Roger attached in the email was automatically opened by my computer in Microsoft Word, but every time I type onto the blank lines they just move over so I'm basically typing outside the lines and end up deleting all the lines included in the application. Is there an easier way to do this??? 😕 The Touro-CA secondary is nice because it is all electronic online, so there are just spaces for your responses instead of lines, which I wish TouroNV had.

Any suggestions would help, but if not, I'll just deal.

^^my application ended up looking a little ******ed line wise.. I did it on word and just underlined all my own words and attemted to leave some of their lines on there.. it was a little off as their lines are slightly below my underlines.. but you know what, i got an interview there anyway.. so i really dont think they care.

Did you hit the insert (Ins) button? It helps but still ends up deleting the lines depending on how much you type.

^^wow i wish i knew about that button.. it took me FOREVER to do the application because of the lines!!

Oh good! I'm glad I'm not the only struggling with that . Oh my gosh I just tried the "insert" button for the first time and I think that solves the problem! Thanks EEL! 😍

😆 It's so funny because I was holding back some choice words when I first started doing the secondaries. My husband is the one who had to teach me about the insert button. The worst part is he explained it to me in the past but I forgot. 😱 I'm glad I could help! 😀

Oh yeah and before my husband reminded me about the insert button I would just highlight the line then underline the whole thing. You guys are definitely not the only ones. I still got somewhat frustrated even with the insert button but it was better than before.

I have yet to hear from TUCOM-NV with a secondary. I am starting to worry. How long does it usually take?? They are high on my list of schools so I really want to hear SOMETHING soon.

Thanks a lot,
I was not impressed with Mare Islands clinical rotations because they move you around a lot. Remember Mare Island students have the highest debts in the country😱. I do not like to speak negative about programs, but this is true. To each his own though. Congrats on the acceptance, and I hope I see you there.👍 PM me if you have any questions.

With your stats, you should get one right now. I got mine almost the instant I sent in my MCAT. Don't worry. It's still early. I would call or email Roger.

im thinking you should call NV.. you never know, they might have gotten it lost or something.. this happened to a friend of mine at another school.

I think I will call them on Monday. They are the only school that I have not received a secondary from and they are high on my list of schools that I would like to attend. Thanks for all the input!!

Anyone having trouble filling out the secondary? I can't seem to be able to fill in the blanks--is their some special something that I am missing?? Any advice is appreciated.

I'll tell you when I completed the secondary, I completely removed the lines and pasted what I wanted to say right in the space. They honestly won't care how you do it. Call and follow up with Roger regarding this, but i would bet that he won't mind that you do it this way.

Haha. Even after I used the insert button and everything, I still had to add some of my own lines. So, ultimately it still looked a bit line-******ed. But, I was like, forget it. I'm sure mine won't be the first they've seen that has imperfect lines. Oh, and I just mailed both my TUCOM (CA,NV) secondaries today! Since it sounds like TUCOM-NV is fast, I'm hoping to hear something next week!

I think the lines are meant to be there for a reason, and I took note and didn't go over the space provided...I think what I did was wrote the text in there, but I underlined it to make it look like it was just placed in there. Hope that helps, need to come up with my $2k deposit now. 🙁

thats exactly what I did.. but the lines didn't look exactly the same so it was ******ed, but i definitley did not go over the space provided

eta. the good thing about the 2k deposit is that if you don't go there you get all but 100$ back! according to Roger anyway!

Yeah, Roger is pretty great, really great actually.

For any current students, do any of you regret going to Touro NV because of the big, lame building with no campus? Do you regret it for anything else?

What does it matter? It didn't affect how my classmates or I studied or performed in classes. So what if it's ugly and lame...you're only there for 2 years and once a month for callbacks during 3rd year. Do I regret it for anything else? No...I think I am getting a good education and I am putting forth my best effort to learn as much as I can before internship. I've also made a lot of great friends. You get what you put into your education no matter where you go...remember that!

I agree with those sentiments. Staying in one building is not only helpful, but it is also beneficial. Especially in NV where it can get pretty hot, staying inside should sound like a God-send. All of the campuses that I interviewed at were single building campuses, and a campus such as TCOM is 2 buildings that are connected so you never really have to go outside if you do not want to.

This must be hard to see while you're still in the classroom all day long but it'll get better. My word of advice is to be nice to the clinical education dept. You wouldn't want to have a reputation of being a rude and overbearing annoying student. When it comes to rotations and shadowing experiences, you'll need to become efficient and very organized - meaning keeping copies of your documents such as immunization record, liability binder, letter in good standing, copies of your ACLS and BLS - for your records and just in case a copy is lost by the med ed dept at a visiting hospital. The paperwork is enormous for both institutions, so have some compassion for those at both ends.

Actually, it's still pretty hard to see while I'm in rotations. The clinical education office NEEDS to hire more people. That's the only way things will get better regardless of how on top of everything a student is. The office is 2 ladies being over-worked to schedule rotations for PA's, 3rd and 4th years (as well as work on Match stuff) and shadowing for 2nd years. So far, I've heard countless stories of students showing up to "confirmed" rotations assignments only to be told that the preceptor was not taking students anymore. I don't think it takes much for a student to come across as rude, overbearing or annoying given the amount of stress both the students and the staff are under.

1. Apply this late date, you think still have chance?
2. Are you sure the deposit can get $1,900 back if choose not to attend?

you definitley get the 1900$ back.. I talked to Roger on the phone and he said you get all but 100$ back.. which is 1900$.. no worries.. and yes, apply!

Spoke to Roger today. As usual, he got back to me by email in two hours. He's by far the most responsive admissions office--and he really is an office unto himself. None of the other schools can touch his responsiveness--of course, many of the allopathics are laughably bad. They communicate with us like it's the seventeenth century. They should all just go to Morse Code; I bet they'd view such a proposal as a "darring and brave innovation in med school admissions."

Anyway, Roger said rotation-related things are getting better--preceptors are becoming more comfortable, rotations are being revised, and they're hiring two more clinical ed. staffers by Feb. 2008. He also said that Touro NV's list of proximal clinical sites can complete with any DO's. Having seen six other DO's and heard about the nomadic nature of their rotations, I believe him. As always, it's more a glass full/empty perception thing than a conspiracy against the students.
