TUCOM NV Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have never understood the reasoning of humid head/cold being more brutal than dry heat/cold. I've lived in Texas where a humid 20 degrees feels like a dry 35 degrees and I've lived in Florida where a humid 100 degrees feels like a dry 90 degrees.

I'm probably just an odd duck...but I'll take humid weather over dry weather anyday.

How long after your aacomas app was submitted did you receive a secondary. I want my secondary already;-) !

About 4 weeks here, but to be fair I don't think they were giving out secondaries for the first 3 weeks I was submitted.

has anyone received a confirmation that the school has your complete supplemental app? mine should be complete with LORs and I haven't heard anything...

I haven't heard anything yet either so I think we're probably fine. They were slow to get their secondaries out and they will probably be slow and saying we're complete. I called and they said that usually within a week of receiving your documents you will hear back but i still haven't.

Nothing here either, but I didn't submit all that long ago.

I TOTALLY!!!! agree with you on that.👍

Hi everyone. If you have any questions about the school, feel free to ask me. I'm a 1st year here. I love it, but would be willing to answer any specific questions you have if you want to PM me. Also, as far as the heat goes, I'm from AZ, so I'm used to the heat. It is the driest city in the country though, and if you're from somewhere with a lot of humidity, it would take some getting used to. But honestly, you're going to be studying so much and in class most of the day, so you won't really notice the heat. If you're from somewhere snowy, you'll love the mild winter. Oh yeah, don't be afraid to call admissions if you have questions, they're really nice!

How are the classes coming along?

Anyone know what the interview format will be? Closed/open file? One on one?

IIRC it was open file. I think they actually had my application in front of them and asked about a couple of grades and grade trends. There were two interviewers and me in the rom. Pretty standard interview day. Last year's schedule was:

9-9:15: Overview, Intro
9:15-9:30: Financial Aid
9:30-10:15: Dean or Associate Dean came in and talked
10:15-10:45: Admissions came and talked to us and took our picture
10:45-11: Break
11-12: Group 1 Interviews, Group 2 Tour
12-1: Group 1 Tour, Group 2 Interviews
1-2: Lunch, Q&A with Director of Admissions. Also came and told us how things would proceed from there

Everything served is Kosher so it was salad and pizza for lunch. There were 16 people in the interview so the tours were in groups of 8. Interviews were individual w/ your two interviewers. While you were waiting for your interview there was a student who you could ask questions about the school, etc.

AAAnnnnd I just got one too. Go us!

Scheduled for October 5th. Interviews are in the evening for some reason, start at 1pm. They only have tuesdays for the first two weeks.

did they send you a complete email before the interview email?

There was no completion e-mail. I faxed everything though so I called them while faxing to make sure it went through and I was complete.

Thanks cbrons, you too. I would have taken the 28th also but I wanted to give myself a chance to hear from AZCOM first.

I finally got it scheduled. I'll be there for the afternoon session on the 28th. Anyone else?

Well my August MCAT scores were lower than the ones the school looked at before they offered me an interview.

Do you think this will have any bearing on whether or not they'll accept me or will they simply use my highest scores (In other words, the ones they looked at prior to offering me an interview).

It's bad enough that I got this bad news about my new scores today but the fact that it could potentially hurt my chances at acceptance makes it all the worse. By the way, it wasn't a drop from a 40T to a 39T. I think my old scores are mediocre at best and pretty below average at worst. I'll leave it that. Any insight would be helpful.

Interview in the a.m October 18th!! So excited 😀

i thought it was kind of weird that you would have to call someone to schedule your interview rather than just either be assigned a date have an online scheduler.

Not really - Nova does that, and LMU only does interview invites by phone.

LECOM-B invites by phone. LECOM-E just assigns you a date, doesn't even give you an option. Nova, Touro-Ca you have to schedule by phone. Same with Touro-NY I think. It varies school to school

ill def be joining you guys! interview invite as well. and yea, some schools have been doing it where you have to call. for touro-ny, they gave a list of available dates and had people pick

So I know this might be a dumb question, but I was wondering what an "okay" answer would be if they ask you Why Nevada? (And I'm assuming they'll ask since most schools do). My honest reason for wanting to attend this school is because my whole immediate family moved to Los Angeles when I started undergrad in ohio, so I would love to only be 5 hours driving distance rather than a 5 hour plane ride.

I'm wondering though, is that an acceptable reason? I mean of course I'll bring things up about the school that really pull me in, but I don't want to bring up family and for them to not like that. I'm an Ohio resident, so I want them knowing I didn't just apply across the country for the fun of it and that I am serious about moving out there. What do you guys think?

Also, congrats on interviews everyone! I'm still in shock and excited!!

stucka, I wouldn't say they moved to LA and nevada is closer than Ohio. I'd say that you family has relocated to the west coast and NV gives you the opportunity to move closer to them so that you have a support system. I would make sure that reason is secondary though IMO because when they ask that it is more what do you like about our school/area.

That is just my opinion though

this is my first time replying to a post, so i hope i did this right lol. i have heard that a lot of schools will look at your best scores from each section and use those. be prepared to explain why you think the scores dropped, but i think you have a good shot, especially because you get the chance to explain in person at the interview.

Thanks for always being so helpful dbdan! I'm always thankful for your advice, and I wish you the best at your interviews!

Well, I don't know how low we're talking here, but I'd say if you're above their minimum cutoff, it might not count against you too much. Another student told me the minimum is a 23, but that was from another student so who knows. And I know of a few students who were accepted with a 23, so that shows you how many factors actually go into your acceptance. Also, very few schools consider your best score on each section. Most schools only consider your most recent MCAT score. At the very least, be prepared to talk about that 2nd MCAT in your interview.

Good luck with interviews everyone! The faculty are very nice, and it is not a stressful interview. It will be a faculty member (PhD, MD or DO) and a staff member usually (e.g. the librarian). Seriously, they just want to know who you are, so the best thing you can do is be yourself. Also, prepare good questions to ask your interviewers at the end. You can even write them down ahead of time. I think personally, the questions I asked of my interviewers made a positive impression on them (they talked forever when answering them!) They will probably ask you about specific grades, scores, etc. and also ask about some of your activities and how they have prepared you for medical school. Also, always be prepared to talk about why you want to go to Touro, and why you want to be a DO. Please come up with something more insightful than, "I want to be a DO because they practice more holistic medicine," or whatever it is the ADA site says. They hear that all the time. And if you need help coming up with an answer to the "Why Touro" question, let me know and I'll tell you all the things that I think would draw a candidate to the school.

And a special good luck to the reapplicants on here. =) I'm pulling for you guys this time around.

Did you guys receive any kind of confirmation after sending in your secondary?

Hey guys,

I'm also a current 1st year here at Touro and would be happy to answer any questions you have about the school. I have lots of good things to say about Touro and all the students here, because I am absolutely loving it!

Don't let people scare you about medical school. Sure, it's tough, but it's also a helluva lot of fun 🙂 Congrats to those of you who have gotten some interviews lined up, and good luck! I'm sure I will see you

I was reading the thread from last year following the whole wait list saga. It was really a nail biter and I was happy to read of your acceptance on one the final pages 🙂 when did you interview last year? Hopefully I won't have to go thru the same...

I interviewed March 7th or 8th or something like that. It was the second-to-last interview date and all but a few of the seats had already been filled at the time of my interview. I didn't even submit my app until January. I really wouldn't worry about being wait listed at this point. You did everything right by applying early and having an early interview is extremely beneficial. =)

Hi there,

I am also a 1st year student (DO '14) at Touro University Nevada. We are currently having our block 1 exams now..but still, if you have any question regarding the school, curriculum or interview please feel free to ask! 🙂

For anyone who has lived in the Las Vegas area or is currently attending Touro-NV I was wondering what it is like living there with the summer weather being so hot. It seems like every day for the past month has been over a 100 degrees.

It's hot! but you'll acclimate...I went running the other night...it was a cool 96 degrees, but it wasn't too bad actually.

oh how i wish i could have started with you guys... i'll be seeing you guys in august though...we still on for a night on the town?

the only school that stricly asks for the required letters and no more is DMU, so you can send extra ones to the other schools unless they explicitly ask otherwise.
