Tufts Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it is possible. lots of decisions to make, but definitely holding this one till we hear about financial aid.

I am interviewing at tufts on 31 Jan 08. Does anyone have any pionters. Was there any off the wall questions or just the traditional medical questions. How was the school atmospher?....laid back etc.

I got accepted early.
The interview was not bad at all. They just wanted to know more about me and my hobbies. The interviewer said that they were just trying to paint a better picture of me.

I interviewed yesterday @ Tufts and loved the school. The interview was very relaxed and laid back. Loved it. Hope to hear from tufts first week of March

how do y'all feel about being in the midst of construction until 2009? it seems like it might be a bit disruptive to me.

I know what you mean. I'm just hoping that they'll do it in bits and pieces and it will not disrupt the flow of things too much. Does anyone know details about the construction?

Hey everyone! Congrats to my fellow acceptees!

Got in through early acceptance too but just received my final acceptance letter... long two years of waiting.

I'll be looking for housing next month... gonna be fun hunting 🙂

it will probably be annoying but i have heard that they are pretty good about keeping us happy. i would think that they have planned to make it as seemless as they possibly can.

do you think the chinatown area is worth living in? im not too familar with boston and haven't made up my mind yet but thinking about coming to the city at least. Id probably want somewhere quiet but in walking distance to some cool spots.

Don't think you'll find anywhere quiet in Chinatown.

I think Beacon Hill is a good place for you. Relatively quiet compared to surrounding spots. Just north of Boston Commons, everything is in walking distance... newbury st, gov center, chinatown and tufts.

Only unfortunate thing is the price tag... probably at least $2k/month for a decent two bedder. But that goes with all apartments in midtown

I think areas like Jamaica Plain or Cambridge/Somerville are cheaper and the commute isn't so bad. Plus I think people in their early to mid twenties may have more to do in this area than Beacon Hill. My impression of BH is that it's very nice, upscale and more mature. Nice for a family but not really the best thing as a young, budget conscious student.

(But then how budget-conscious are we in the first place if we're going to Tufts?:scared:)

I heard on the tour from current Tufts students that the housing office is very helpful in this area and there are apartments that have been "passed down" from class to class that are very nice and also reasonable👍😍. Anyone have some experience with this? Upperclassmen, are you folks lurking on this thread?

Do we have to get housing early? or can it be done in august? anyone know

Boston's a huge college town with lots of people hunting for housing. It can be done in August, but it'll be slim pickings. I recommend starting your hunt now. Craig's List is surprisingly helpful for finding places to live in Boston. It all depends on your budget.

If you want low budget with a pretty good commute time down to TUSM, Brighton/Allston might be somewhere you'll want to check out. Lots of college students living there; somewhat more reasonable pricing. I wouldn't really recommend the immediate Chinatown area, but areas on Boylston, Tremont, Winter St aren't bad (expensive though). If you've got a trust fund, I'd say go for Beacon Hill or Copley. Longwood area is a trek, but it's nice and reasonably priced. Parts of Brookline aren't too expensive, and it's a nice community in which to live (especially for families).

Hi all,

I've been accepted to TUSM Class of 2012 and am excited! I'm not sure if I'll be attending, depending on aid.

I live in the Boston area right now. When I first moved here, I started looking for a place in June to move in August 1 (in 2005). Most places though probably won't be available to look at until the month before (so July for an August move in), since most landlords want their apartment occupied immediately. You can try early, but I think you'll see more places the month before you want to move here. And craigslist is by far the best source for apartments.

As for places to live, Beacon Hill/Back Bay/South End are nice, but a bit pricey. For cheaper housing that's still an easy commute to school, I suggest Cambridge/Somerville (where I live), Jamaica Plain, Brighton/Allston, or Charlestown.

Good luck and congratulations!

Has anyone received information on the Posner dormitories?

Has anyone received information on the Posner dormitories?

I don't know about Posner, it looked a bit rundown. I also want a kitchen...and I dunno about shared bathrooms in med school, seems like freshman year of college to me.

is anyone going to second look this weekend? i just found out that they reimburse travel...

i didn't know there was one...

ok so what i didn't realize when i posted that was that it's a minority student recruitment type second look...

For those of you who filed for financial aid...

Were you able to get everything complete for the deadline? I still don't have my tax return yet. I plan on sending it as soon as I have it of course, but do you think that the financial aid office will consider that after the "preferred status" deadline of March 14th?

I think the fine print says you should include last year's return and update them on this year's when you can.

Does anyone here know if Tufts offers merit scholarships? If so, when do they let you know? If we already recieved our Fin Aid package and did not have any mention of scholarships does that mean I did not get one? Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't hold out on Tufts offering you a merit scholarship. If your numbers are truly extraordinary (e.g. 3.9 GPA, 40 MCAT), call/write/visit the financial aid office and try to negotiate.

Heyyo.

Has anyone accepted/thinking of applying for the MD/MBA program? I'm in the mix and looking for some other people considering the program or have already accepted.

Housing. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the alloted housing $$ are in the financial aid...I'm probably going to be living 100% off of whatever loans I get and am trying to figure out what a reasonable amount of rent to look for.

Advice for any upcoming interviews. They seemed to ask a lot of questions which got to the question, "How are you unique? What have you done with your self?" My suggestion, for what it's worth, work on that type of question.

I assume you are applying this year then, as interviews are over for this cycle...Anyway, if you get Dr. Nun then be prepared for some serious philosophy. You better know the meaning of life.

I read in another forum that:

Also, for all of you eager beavers thinking about buying TEXTBOOKS-- DON'T. Textbooks are expensive and a waste of time, and there are very few that you need. If you're going to buy something useful, buy Lippincott's Biochemistry (although the biochemistry syllabus is really really good so you won't need this) for the diagrams and to use for reference, but you don't need it.

What should a good student do to prepare for the fall?

Quick question about 3rd/4th year...does everyone spend time in Springfield? Do people live there for a few weeks/months? This is one of the few negative things I can think of about Tufts, but Springfield is pretty far!

Anyone want to create the Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 2012 facebook group?!

Hello fellow classmates. Anyone in the boston area already? Anyone going to the reception on tuesday?

There is already one. Check out TUSM class of 2012 on facebook.

I read in another forum that:

As a TUSM student I can promise you there is really no need to prep before school starts in August. Just make sure you read a little bit of the syllabus every day once class starts up and you will do well. We're pretty laid back and chill so no need to be too gunner this summer. Enjoy the summer!

You don't have to do any rotations at Springfield. It's just an option open for you

Does everyone pretty much go to classes? I was looking at the schedule online and I was trying to picture how much time I could spend studying on my own vs. required lectures.

During my interview, the tour guide mentioned that about 80% of students attend any given lecture (if I remember correctly).

Hey all, I got my acceptance ages ago in early-February (how about that for a happy Valentine's Day present?), but I've finally decided to venture back onto SDN and see who my classmates are for next year. I'm getting a good vibe from what I've read already...

And yes, I'm still stoked two months later that I'm going to be a doctor, haha. Hope to see you all later in the summer, and I'll be checking in both here and on Facebook!

😀

anyone need a roommate? i'm looking for another girl to share a 2 bedroom with me. i'm in boston now looking at apartments, going back to florida for the summer.

Im looking for some male roommates to start in the fall. PM me if you are interested.

I'm going to be an M1 at Tufts next year and I'm looking for 2 male roommates from our class...already found a place so message me if you might be interested.

Does anyone know when plain old MD orientation starts for '12ers?

Hi All!!!

I'll be joining you in the fall!!! I currently live in Boston (well, Arlington actually), but am looking to move- if anyone knows of a good 1-2 bedroom that will allow a dog, PLEASE PM ME!

thanks!

I had the academic calender sent to me. I also have the first semester schedule of all classes for each day. Send me an email address and i will gladly pass it on to whoever. To answer the question it starts 8/25. The other useful date is the white coat ceremony on 9/20. Hope that helps.

Also I know people on the facebook group for our class have been looking for roomates.

does anyone having any information about health insurance? I'm living in the Boston area now and I'm wondering if I need to change my PCP come August....

If there any male students looking to move into my apartment in the metropolitan with me as a roommate for 1400/month please send me a PM.

Thanks!

I'm not matriculating until 2009 (did an early assurance program) but I am curious as to where in Boston it costs that much per person.
