Hi guys, I need some help here. I got an invite to interview at Tufts, however they say that it's most likely for their alternate list, because they're already pretty full 🙁 I don't know if I should go? I'm on the west coast, so I've gotta think about cost as well.

Those of you who've interviewed there already, what was your impression of the college, the people, the facilities? I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hey Mysteree, I also got an interview invite today. I guess they lost one of my letters and I didnt find out until last week, and right when i couriered my letters yesterday i got the invite today. I also do not know if it is worth it, I already flew to Boston for BU interview a few weeks ago, I talked to the admission's person at BU and she said my app was solid with good dat scores and gpa, and interview went really well, but she did not tell me that i was accepted so I am optimistic but also unsure if she just says that to alot of applicants. But does anyone know how full TUFTS class of 2010 looks right now? Thanks guys

Also I noticed the class characteristics of TUFTS on their website states that there was only 3% of Canadians in the class of 158. I am from BC, and am wondering if that means I shouldnt even go there since it seems like no Canadians get accepted. Thanks guys!

I was at tufts on feb. 7th and they had 83 deposits from offering ~220 acceptances....also they had interviewed (including our group) 310 people....that being said, I think they will still have seats open in march...good luck on the interviews (not stessful)

I got an invite via email today... I was actually a bit surprised because I thought they requited Biochem.. which I never took... they said they will also follow up with a formal letter.

Well they gave me a list of dates in early march to choose from. Well, I don't know what are ideal stats for them. I have decent stats, but I'm not like CC who's got a 25 on PAT. Way to go! very impressive. What was their interview like?

i interviewed at Tufts on 2/6. it was a great interview. the whole day was well planned and the school is awsome. i've also heard that a lot students actually prefer Tufts over BU. if you want to go to school in boston and money isnt really a big issue for you, you should definitely check out Tufts! 😀

Yes, you assumed right, by cost I meant travel expenses. Well my desperation, at the moment is on a sliding scale, some days it's high, others not so. I have been accepted to one school, which is also private and on the east. So thus far, either way I'm going some place pricey. I see your point though, that more might bail out from there, than UCLA. Hopefully, I won't have to wait that long to know where I'm going. I'll try and contact dubs.

well, it depends on how desperate you are for an acceptance:
too desperate, then go: tufts is costly and therefore expect many to bail out right before classes start. which means that Tufts' waitlist is more hopefull tha say, UCLA's waitlist.

not desperate: if you have acceptance elsewhere, then i suggest that you skip tufts and save your bucks, unless the school you got accepted to is intolerable. i dont think that there's any school that is that bad in the U.S.


oh...and as far as facilities, Tufts is flawless. as far as students, you will find a well-balanced student body. it's a great place to be really. i suggest you consult with DUBS (another SDNer). he is attending Tufts i think.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Mysteree. Tufts has a high student turnover ratio, b/c its expensive. So alot of people will get in from the alternate list. You could ask Mark how many people from the alt list actually got in from last year. He's very helpfull.

As far as my impression of the school. I was very impressed by it. Faculty seems very helpfull and friendly. Facilities all seem new and they have a very nice sim lab. The interview was not an interview but a conversation me and a D4 had. I don't think he asked a single question. Good luck!

I actually just interviewed at Tufts on Tuesday (2/21). I loved the city of boston and was very impressed with the facilities, faculties, and students. I will tell you the stats that they told us.

15% of 3600 applicants are interviewed
Out of those that are interviewed:
60% are accepted
15% wait listed
10-15% put on hold (due to incomplete applications)
and 5% rejected.
**This did not add up to 100% but you get the idea.

During my interview, I was the only of the 13 from the south. There were 3 candidates from Toronto and others from Utah, Jersey, Southern Cal, Harvard, City College in New York, and Univ. of Minnesota. I was wowed by the tour, and the day involved a detailed lecture on the curriculum for four years. Tufts goes deeper into medicine than most other schools nationwide. The school is expensive, but you definitely see that your dollars go into new technology for the school (simulation clinic, etc.). Good luck with your decision and hope you don't take my spot! The ad committee does not meet until next week I think, and our decision will be made by next Friday.

Oh yeah. They have 130 deposits already made and they are shooting for a class of 150. Obviously, more deposits than 150 will be accepted b/c of those who place deposits down on other schools (and in recent years Tufts has always had a class of larger than 150). Hope this helps.

You're right, their stats are interesting, i.e not adding up to a 100% thanks for the breakdown, that's very helpful. You were wowed by the tour, because the facilities are great...or was it something else? Did they mention anything about housing. Is there student housing, do they help you find a place..? I've been to Boston once, and even that was in passing, so I can't remember if the city's got a good public transportation or does one need a car?

Hopefully, there will be plenty of room for the both of us at Tufts 🙂

Pitt's students seemed to be so enthusiastic about their school in my visit and I am considering about applying to specialty program after I graduate so I would rather go to a less competitive school.

I guess my initial fear was that I was going to be overwhelmed by the size of Boston. In fact, I thought the city was incredible. Clean, safe, and even the cold was doable (although highs of 32 were apparently pretty warm). The T system (subway) was reliable, and it can drop you off right at the school. It costs $1.25 no matter where you go or on what line. I thought it was much safer, cleaner than New York's, but not quite up to speed with DC's metro.

There are dorms located a block away from the school that house 40 incoming first years. I actually viewed an apartment of a girl that goes to Emerson College. She lives in Beacon Hill (seemed to be the nicest area) and she paid $1900/month for 2 bedroom apartment. This was REALLY high compared to what I am used to paying, but it was split with a roommate, and included heat and water bills. (Keep in mind I think this was the most expensive a place could be). If you do not live in the student housing, they hire a housing coordinator in may to help you find a place and a roommate. I drive a truck and there is no way I would take it up there, wouldn't know where to put it. Another suprising thing was that there was not bumper to bumper traffic like you would see in New York, not so fast paced. And it seemed that most of the people walking the streets were students (BU, BC, Tufts, Emerson College, Suffock College). I think the facilities and the people were what wowed me. Nicest facilities I have seen at a school so far.

yes this is rather high... generally in jan-feb we have many days in the 20's (feels lower with windchill)

yep, and i wouldnt expect to find much lower even in the "cheaper" areas of the city... a couple years ago my dirty, tiny 4 bedroom apartment was $2600/month

its generally up in the 30s or 40s by march, but there certainly can be snow (although its not guaranteed). in fact i can remember 1 or 2 years when we got snow in april (though it didnt accumulate)

It takes about 45 minutes taking the subway + shuttle. If I recall, the interview was over around 3. 🙂

The ride is 45 minutes but it costs only 1.25, a taxi would run around 30 bucks. I'm cheap. 😀

It depends on where you are staying. I changed subways once, and then took a shuttle from the subway station to the airport. Their mass transportation system is pretty darn good. I was scared thinking I'd get lost somewhere but I got used to it after the first day. I ended up spending all the money I saved for food though. 🙂
