I want to pursue a future as a physician-scientist.

1. Given my aspirations, do you feel it would be more advantageous to attend Tufts MSTP or Yale SOM (MD Only)?

2. What would you do if you were in my position?

Take the MSTP. It's in the bag. You may be able to transfer in at Yale, but from what I remember it's a smaller program and you may be left out. You could still do research later on without the MSTP, but why not take advantage of the opportunity if that's what you really want to do? As long as there are plenty of PI's you could see yourself working for at Tufts, this is a no brainer. If you don't think there is really much opportunity there, then the answer is more difficult.

Second for Tufts. If research is what you want to focus on, MSTP >>> MD

I'm biased since I did MSTP, but I vote for Tufts. Aside from research opportunities and being guaranteed fun times as a grad student, cold winters are a lot better in Boston than in New Haven.

Not that I am very knowledgeable, but it just seems practical to me that if you desire to be a physician-scientist and that doorway is open, go for it. Yale is a great school, but in the end having the name on your diploma won't make you as happy if you're strictly a clinician when you wanted to go another route. Not to mention that you will get an excellent education at Tufts, it's not as if it's a third-rate school. Just my two cents.
