Hey guys I was wondering how the test schedule is at Tufts...i think I read it is block schedule so you have tests every 3-4 weeks. Is it more stressful than a test schedule that is spread out?? Any experiences from current or past students at Tufts??

It's stressful either way. I'm really stressed out with the block schedule, and I have friends at UIC that are really stressed out with a spread out schedule. It's dental school, it's really stressful regardless 😛

I like the block schedule better because it allows more opportunities to go out and be social. Right after an exam block, we essentially have a week where everybody relaxes and de-stresses and parties, before getting back to work. With a spread out schedule, you always have an exam coming up, and probably less opportunities to go out and be social.

On the other hand, if you're not a disciplined person and need a more strict schedule to succeed, you will not do well with a block schedule. If you're going to party for weeks and then cram at the last minute for 5 tests that are coming up, instead of studying a little every day, you will fail. If you're a disciplined person, it wouldn't matter whether you were at a school with a block schedule or a spread out schedule.

In my opinion though, the block scheduling is a minor factor when considering where to attend dental school.

Hey somethinpositiv,

I couldn't PM you or anything so hopefully you get this in time.

i was wondering what year you are in at tufts and if you could give me any more information on the program. i interviewed there on jan. 20 and got accepted last week and i'm prettys ure i'm going to go but it also depends on 1 other school and a really hard decision if i get in to the other school. but i'm just trying to get as much information as i can about both schools to make an educated decision. so that i really know what i'm getting into.

I think I read somewhere that Tufts is trying to transition into having the students take boards part I after their first years. Do you know anything about this like if it's true and when they plan on making that transition if it happens? On an older post I read that they were trying to change it for the class of 2015 or 2016 but i would be class of 2015 and i don't think they mentioned changing it to taking it after the first year .. but Yeah, I was wondering if you had heard anything about that.

But yeah, any other cons/weaknesses at Tufts that you can point out? (other than weather during the winter lol) It sounds like a great program with a very good clinical experience.

Thanks so much for your help!

The block schedule is nice. But it's a lot easier to have them spread out and focus on one, two and sometimes three exams that week. There's definitely time to go out if that's your thing. Honestly, the structure of exams probably doesn't matter.

from what i've heard inside the walls, that the next the class of 2014 would take their boards in jan-feb 2012, which is great imo, you have winter break to study, and before all of the crazy pre-clinical courses and labs and to have that out of the way is a huge plus. However the 14's perform will determine when the 15's would take it also.
