How much is out of state tuition for Tufts? And how much is their deposit? Thanks! 🙂

Jen

Isn't Tufts a private school? Same tuition for all. I'm not sure, I'm sure it's on their website. Probably around 45K just for tuition.

Tuition 2005-2006: $42,850

Ist deposit = $1500 (within 30 days)
2nd deposit = $500 (around May)

Thanks! That's not bad at all.

Ummm..are you sure. That's pretty expensive. Right up there with BU and Penn. The price tag for these schools is certainly their biggest negative if you ask me.

Also, this price isn't what you'll have to pay to the school. It's just tuition. I'm sure there are a whole lot of other fees that you need to pay so plan on a fee of about 52-55 K per year. I don't know the numbers but that's what I'm thinking it would come out to after instruments, insurance, technology fee....etc

yeaa... try over $70k from what i hear

Tuition will increase every year....expect to pay an extra $2000/year for tuition when the 2006-2007 numbers come out.

Last year I think Tufts increased by like 3-4K!! 😱

Here are the #'s that Tufts gave us at the interview for current students (D'09 to D'06)

First year = $42,850 (tuition) / $71,319 (total cost including living expenses)

Second year = same tuition / $74, 214

Third year = "" / $70,381

Fourth year = "" / $65, 209

Total = $281,123

"Students should anticipate an estimated 5% increase in tuition and fees each year."

$16,500 per year for living expenses in Boston is a joke. If you want to live anywhere close to a train/bus and in a place larger than a closet, be prepared to shell out a minimum of $800 per month on rent alone. I know from experience - I lived right outside of Boston during undergrad and when I was working before I started school. I would budget more like $20,000 per year on living expenses. That's a lot more realistic.

Oops! I misread it. I thought the total cost PLUS expenses was $42, 850 😳

Supposing $300 K is what you owe upon graduation, it will easily be over $25K per year of loan repayment for the rest of your career or 25-30 years. What do you all think a dentist should comfortably make in order to have that taken care of?

No 16.5K is about right. I lived in Boston last year while doing a Master's program at BU Med School. I lived in Back Bay, a great area! on Beacon and Clairindon. I had a one badroom, good sized, for $1300/month. The only draw back was that is was on the 4th floor with no elivator, but the brownstone building was awsome. If you multiply this by 12 (12 months in a year) you will have $15,600.

According to your suggestion of min. of $800, that makes $9,600/year. That;s well below the suggested living expence. The suggested cost of 75K has a separate area for food, transportation, etc. Living expences are just rent, gas, phone.

If you are lucky and you look hard enough you can find a nice place to live in Boston, but it will be pricey! Things in South Boston, near BU Med/Dent school are a little cheaper. Stay away from Dorechester (they call it Diechester for a reason!)

do living expenses include food, transportation, miscellaneous expenditures, etc.? at around $75,000 i sure hope so, otherwise it's gonna take me more than 7 years to pay off my debt :scared:

The $16,500 is for all living expenses, not just rent. So if a student was to live where you lived, and payed $15,600 in rent alone, that would leave them exactly $900 for food, utilities, etc. for the entire year. So $16,500 wouldn't be enough there. But that is a great location.

If you do have $800 in rent, that comes out, as you said, to $9,600 per year. That would leave you with $6,900 for all other expenses, which is $575 per month. When you factor in utilities (cell phone, heat, electricity, internet access, etc.), food, booze, T-pass, that $575 can be consumed pretty quickly. And that doesn't take into account optional expenses, like a car, travel expenses, and other things.

It is definitely possible to live on that living allowance, but you'll have to be pretty frugal and very careful with your money. Boston is not a cheap town.

I went to Tufts Univ. for undergrad. The undergrad campus is in Medford/Somerville, which is about 5-10 minutes north of Harvard's main campus in Cambridge. After graduating, a lot of my friends moved to the Brighton/Fenway area, which is right on the green line (the trolley system) and is ideal for commuting into downtown. On average, I remember a lot of two bedrooms very close to the Green Line went for about $1500 to $1600 per month, with no parking.

I would have loved to have stayed in Boston to do dental school at Tufts, but after 4 years of undergrad at Tufts, I couldn't financially handle 4 more years of private school. So I'm at Buffalo, which is half the price of Tufts. But Tufts is a great school and Boston is an awesome town, just a little pricey for my tastes.

Man, I didn't realize that Tufts was so expensive...I guess the $6,000 scholarship barely makes a difference after all. I'm not going to Tufts, so hopefully someone else can get that scholarship money 🙂
