what are the differences between these 2 schools? advantages of one over the other? which would you pick? also, do they give preference to instate students?? im a massachusetts girl... one more question: do you think its worth it to go to tufts/bu over u mass?? u mass is so much cheaper and it isn't like tufts or bu are in the top 10... im interested in GI and ER medicine--not research... thanks!!

Go to UMass if you can get in. Tufts and BU are expensive and really wont give you a leg up on the competition. UMass has a great tuition program and wont kill you with loans. Also, UMass has a great primary care rating and will help you if you enter ER or IM. I worked there for several years and was waitlisted a couple years ago. Its a great school with good teaching.

I liked Tuft's curriculum/program better than BU's. Or at least I like how they explained it better in their interviews. I also think Tufts is in a more accessible neighborhood than BU at least considering the T and ease of commuting which might have made a difference to me as their tuition rates are practically the same. I really liked the idea of Tufts letting you shadow doctors in clinics...I don't remember the specifics as this interview was almost two years ago...but I thought it sounded cool. And, who wouldn't want to walk across the street and get some delicious steamed bao from china pearl between classes?!

In the end, I dropped Tufts for McGill because the tuition/cost of living was so greatly different and I didn't think the extra tens of thousands of dollars would make that much difference in getting me into a residency program...so I'd bet the same is probably true for the difference between Umass and Tufts. I guess you need to get into both first to have that decision, however! (and, Boston living beats Worcester any day...but at least in Worcester you won't have to pay the outrageous rent)

if i were you, i'd go for BU. i am by no means an expert about the pros and cons of each of these 2 schools, but i do know that the Tufts medical school looks almost like a run down building. it doesn't mean that it's a bad school, but it does suggest that it's tight on money and thus resources. BU apparently has a pretty good dentistry program. they're using a lot of uptodate technology for their program and if this is so, i would expect that this probably extended from well supported med program. i know a few BU med grads who have gone to do residency at Harvard and know none from Tufts. of course this is just a small sample size as i don't know so many Harvard residents.

Don't know much about BU, but do know about Tufts. I would say the schools are pretty similar... both in sh*tty neighborhoods, and you will pay out the ass for both. Haven't seen BU's match list, but Tufts' seems to be pretty good from what I can tell over the past few years.... Tufts seems to match people into competitive specialties or top programs in less competitive specialties as a general trend.... however, it's tough to interpret this data before you get into med school unless you know a lot about the medical community beforehand. I would guess BU is similar in that regard as well. Be sure you like Boston before you pick either school... you will be in a lot of debt with either. I don't like Boston and I'm kicking myself for going to Tufts because of the high cost and awful weather. However, I'm confident that I'll be able to leave Boston for greener pastures with my Tufts education at the end of four years, and I don't know how fun med school can really be no matter where you go.

Also, to reply more specifically to the OP's post, you should go to UMass if you can get in. If you like Boston you can come in and go out on the weekends from Worcester. You will save yourself about 150K in total cost by going to UMass. If you are financing with loans, this savings will be closer to 250-300K over the life of the loan. I would have gone to my state school over Tufts if I had gotten in, had I not gotten f-d over by the admissions committee at that school.

I would pick UMass over all of them. Including Havard if that is what you "H" stands for.

You can defenietly land a Harvard affiiated hospital by going to Umass.
