Tufts vs. BU Third Year hours/weekends?

I am an MSII, looking at possibly transferring to Boston next year, which means either Tufts or BU.

Since I have family commitments, one of the factors I have to consider in comparing these two strong schools is the schedule in third year, since schools can vary dramatically in the amount of call and weekends required during rotations.

Can anyone give me some rough schedules from these schools? I understand it depends on the attending and the cases. I mainly just want to see if they are pretty equal in the hours/overnight or if one is clearly more than the other.

Ideally, I would rather not be flamed with comments about how medicine is not for people who care about what hours they work. There are plenty of us out here who are making it work in balance with other priorities.

The hours for BU clerkships differ depending on the rotation. I think the usual surgery day starts around 6:30 and you have to be on call every third night while other rotations may start a little later. Being on call depend on the rotation and the attending. I cant comment on Tufts, but at BU, you rotate through a lot of different hospitals since there isnt enough space for everyone @ BUMC, most of your inpatient time is at the two hospitals next to the school that make up BUMC (city and university hospital) but there are probably about 15-20 or so other hospitals/clinics you could end up at depending on the rotation. some are better than others, but on the average you can expect:


Surgery- in around 5:00 -5:30 ,out usual 5-7:00, Q4 call, w/e off except if on call. experience can vary depending on hospital and chief resident (thank god B.J. is gone she realy sucked👎). I know the 3rd year has been restructured, but when i was there, there was a 6 week core in Gen surgey and then 2x - 2.5 week electives in sub specialties. truama @ BUMC was crazy in around 4:00 out at around 7 most of the time w/ Q4 call. Ortho @ the V.A was the polar opposite, in at 7:00 out around 2-3:00 after the last case. no call, resident told me not to bother w/ clinic. 3-4 different hospitals.

OB/GYN: during OB- in around 5:00 -5:30 ,out usual 5-6:00, exept on L&D, which you have to do 2-3x, you stay overnight and for rounds the next morning. GYN can vary but usualy in at 5-6:00 out around 4-6:00. Schedule differs from hospital to hospital , w/e off except if on call. 4-5 different hospitals

Medicine: in before 7:00, done around 6-7:00, Q4 call, 1 day off a week which depends on call schedule. Q4:short/long

Family Med- 9-5:00, w/e off, but varies a lot, there are a dozen+ hospitals/clinics all over new england.

peds: 7-5 w/e off, some call, 5-6 hospitals

PSY: easy rotation, 9-5 at worst, w/e off

Rads: easier than PSY.

neuro + Geri: somewhere between rads and peds.


That was my experience there, your milage can vary. I thought i had a
pretty decent schedule most of the time. I would drive to NY on the w/e to see my fiance/family/friends whenever possible, and throughout the year there was only 5-6 times i couldn't.
