Tufts VS Nova

Ok, I can make a list of pros and cons for each school that doesnt help my decision one bit. I wanted to get a general feedback from you guys to see what everyone else thinks. SOO Tufts VS Nova and why? THANKS

Hey, thanks for the response. Just out of curiosity, why did you rank boston better than fort lauderdale? What do you like better about it?

I think come January, Ft. Lauderdale will be much more appealing temperaturewise compared to Boston. Would you rather be in the sun or in the freezing cold?

i'm a bit biased b/c i've spent my whole life (minus 4 yrs of college) in south florida and it gets old very quickly... driving everywhere, traffic, rude people, feeling like you're in another country, fast-paced, no seasons, etc etc. it becomes stressful.

i've been to boston a number of times and it is by far my favorite large city in the entire country. very historical, tons of college kids, beautiful (17th century buildings), possible to live car-free, SEASONS, close to the mountains (i love to board), and i could go on & on....

with that said, i've never spent any considerable amount of time battling a brutle winter so take what ive said with caution.

I am from South Florida, but attending school out west. I am personally really tired of winter. It sucks living in a place where it is cold half the year. I prefer the beach and warm weather.

Boston is awesome though. It's a really fun city and definately a lot of colleges around. New England is just a really awesome area.

Either way you will be taking out some relatively massive loans.

Plus, the dolphins train right next to Nova. Alot of MLB teams have spring training in South Florida. Beach. Boston has the Red Sox 🙂

I don't know about Tufts but I hear Nova is pretty laid back.

I visited Nova not too long ago. I would go only if they offered me full ride to the school or if they offered to get the gum out of my car's exhaust pipe.

The administration seems very suspicious of all the students. They have people sign in once they enter the class room through this electronic scanner. It's not Pentagon man.

lol, interesting comment, care to elaborate a little more?? I have visited both schools and I really liked both of them (hence the reason for this post in the first place). The two main issues I am contemplating is reputation (which Tufts has) over cost (which Nova sort of has) Nova is about $30k cheaper, but that factoring in loan interest over the life of it, and cost difference of living in boston vs florida can add up. While dentists make good money i know, that is still a big sum to pay back and figure it would take me an extra 2 + years to pay off the difference. Not as big of a deal as an instate vs out, but hey lets say I come out of it with an extra 50K in the hole when all is said and done, its still 50K..... Is going to the better reputation / program worth the expense? Some people on here say reputation is the way to go if your going to specialize, which im undecided at the moment. So lets count it out for now. I do happen to like florida weather, although summers can be brutal. I am an east coaster so im used to winters (but dont necessarily love them. lol)
The students at both schools seemed to be pretty happy compared to some of the other schools I visited.

Dude just go to the one where you think you will be able to get the highest GPA for = amount of work if you plan on Specializing. I would go to NOVA ! I am applying there this summer or next. GL

I don't know about Nova, but I know that Tufts doesn't have a very high specialization rate. That may add some weight to your decision. Either way they are both awesome schools and you can't lose with either choice. Its really up to personal preference but you should definitely pick Nova since I'm on the waiting list at Tufts 👍

I thought Tufts did pretty good at specializations, but I guess if you are doing well at any school you can specialize. It's all relative to how much work YOU want to put in ultimately. I know Tufts does well on the boards, not sure about Nova. I agree, there are MUCH worse decisions to have to make in life and im very thankful for even having a seat anywhere, let alone a choice. I just wanted to get as much feedback as possible, as quickly as possible so I can make my decision and give up a seat to someone else who is waiting. So you obviously want that seat at Tufts, is that a top choice for you? Mind if I ask what you liked so much about it? Thanks for the input everyone.

I think Nova takes their first boards after the first year, unlike all the others that take it after the second year. I think that would come in handy when it comes to studying to take the boards because it is only 1 year of info and not 2.

Hmm thats a good point. Well, if I did decide on Nova, I would want to take the North East boards so I can practice up here. Would having only the 1 year of studying and experience at Nova hurt me in taking the NERB if all of the other schools wait 2 years before having you take it?

I applied to a lot of schools and interviewed at Tufts, WVU, USC and Colorado. I am waitlisted at Tufts and WVU and would put Colorado as my current top choice but am still waiting to hear back from them. I would love to go to Tufts if I had the opportunity because they had such a solid clinical program and the facilities were state of the art. I personally think it would be fun living in Boston and having the "big city" experience since I grew up in a much smaller city.

I really don't know anything about Nova, other than it is in Florida and I have heard that it is a great program as well. Since I have no acceptances, I would be willing to go anywhere at this point and hopefully enough spots open up at Tufts to allow me the opportunity. Good luck on your decision and if you think your position is tough, just remember that there are still those out there waiting to get in somewhere!

During my interview at Nova, it was mentioned that 98% (I think) passed the boards. Students at Nova take their boards after the first year, but it's not over any less material than if they took it after two years like most schools. Nova has the curriculum arranged so that students take the required courses during the first year, and they are prepared to take them the summer after first year.

i say this because we got our total debt bill today (from undergrad and dental school, not including private loans...) All I can say is WOW.

Pick the less expensive school.

Yeah, a lot of people take paying it back for granted, but even 10-20k extra in the long run can have big impact.. Although you do get reputation for your money at tufts, personally I think their program is better too, so your not only paying for a name brand, but a better product... Of course you get the same degree no matter what, a reputation might help toward a specialty, otherwise, I think it only matters to the individual who went there. The cheaper tuition and living expenses at Nova make it appealing.

are you taking into account the cost of living? the tuition difference alone is roughly 20k. & i know FTL is expensive but my friend paid 50k (yes, that's right) for a parking spot in boston. it was also about 3 years ago so it could've been near the top of the real estate market.

go with nova, it has nicer weather and the living cost is a lot cheaper. Save money while you can so you don't have to spend the rest of your life paying the bank for tuition. think of the interest cost you are accumulate even with a difference of only $20,000. NOVA is a pretty good school so definitely go with NOVA. that is my $.02
