I was accepted two both school and I need help deciding where to go. For Tufts I have to retake a chemistry class that I took at a Community college. For Temple all I have to do is pay my deposit and I’m in. Where would you go and why?😕

go where ever will make you happy. it's hard to give you advice just based on retaking a class vs. paying your desposit. Either situation is not so bad.

At this point all you have to do is get a passing letter grade on the retake in chem for Tufts. Don't let that slant your decision towards Temple. Let another factor do that. Tufts is an excellent school. They will really work you over clinically. 👍

I thought temple didn't accept pre-reqs from CC either!?

As far as i know, Temple does take CC college courses. I didn't get anything from them when I went for the interview. Tufts gave me a check list with a big mark next to the class i have to retake. I know they are both clinical oriented, but which school has a better reputation?

ok in that case, i'd go with Temple because it would make more sense to live in philly and pay less money than pay more both for tuition and cost of living in boston. I think Temple ranks pretty decent, probably better than tufts.

Just to clarify, there are no rankings for dental schools. From my experience talking to dentists, they mostly just lump all the "private northeastern schools" together in their mind; the general public cares much less.

This isn't a decision you should be making based on the "reputations" of the schools.

Looking at Predents it looks like tuition at Temple is a bit cheaper than Tufts, but I'd imagine the cost of living is less in Philly than Boston. If it helps at all, I spoke with a member of the Tufts class of '07 a few days ago and she said she was in the hole for 300k (not that I asked, she just mentioned it as part of the pros/cons of Tufts) and said a large part of that was the COL in Boston. Other than that she said she was very happy with her education at Tufts. Not sure what the price tag for Temple is but probably somewhat less than this.

If you are out of state, Temple might reach about 300k. I calculated my debt as an out-of-stater at Temple, and it came out to 250k (incl. interest of 50k). I have heard of Temple alum debts of 300k, though.

If you are going to be happy at Tufts, re-taking that chem course will be worth it.

Good luck 👍

I would say tufts. I interviewed at both schools and found Tufts to be better because of the facilities, first impression from students, faculty, and administration, and the reputation. I thought the academics at tufts was better in that i would be a better clinician because of the more medically enhanced curriculum. I also think Boston is the better city, but this is a personal opinion. Yes, it may cost more to live here, but its great city that is close to other major cities and there is a lot to do. I did get into Temple and other schools (BU, UMDNJ), but I chose tufts hands down.

The best to you.

I was in your shoes a few weeks ago trying to decide between Temple and Tufts. Luckily, I got into VCU which was my top choice so I had no further decisions to make. However, I had it down to just Temple seeming a bit more comfortable to me then Tufts. I was afraid of Tufts because (1) I didn't want to take a course on how to commute in Boston, (2) Preclinical experience would have been jeopardized due to the vertical expansion, (3) Taking an elevator 8-10 times daily seemed like a ride I wasn't willing to take for 4 years, (4) Crowded hallways exacerbated my claustraphobia, (5) Curriculum didn't attract me as an effective way to study for the boards. In other words, I study better by myself with less classes rather then a heavier courseload with less private time to study for the boards. I know they rank higher then the national average but I just clash with that board-prep style,, (6) General feel of the area was that everyone was worried about themselves (i.e. profile, image, social status) then they were about others.

I liked Temple for all the same reasons but on the other side of the coin. I really liked how the courseload was formatted to help students learn the important things about dentistry without trying to bedazzle students with regards to the academic reputation of the school; I want to learn, not be bedazzled. I don't know, I guess I just felt more comfortable at Temple then I did at Tufts and had I not been accepted to VCU I would have gone there in a heartbeat. Good luck in your decision.

THat i know Tuft is the only dental school that does not accept CC classes.. (stupid)
Therefore, go to Temple!!

Is it true that Tufts has a better reputation than Temple or is this a bunch of BS?

personally.... i really would not want to retake chem.. i assume you'd have to take it this summer... that would be extra $$$ and your entire summer! unless you really liked tufts that much more than temple, then i would say go with temple. then again.. if you really liked tufts a lot more, than maybe it would be worth taking chem again.. if you were impressed equally by both schools then go with the easier road... why take on excess burden?
